Ok so it's been done a zillion times before but with all of the current best player/best PL 11 threads, it's worth doing it again.

I go (from players i've actually seen live and can remember enough about to judge them sensibly ie not Hughes, Keegan, Toshack etc)

Pepe
Nicol Sami Hansen Kennedy
Gerrard Souness Molby Barnes
Dalglish Rush

Subs: Clem, Carra, Lawro, McMahon, Whelan, Beardsley, Fowler

Reina

Neal Hansen Hyypia Nicol

Souness Gerrard
X Barnes

Dalglish Rush

X= Whelan, McManaman, Heighway (despite being a lefty), ray Kennedy.

Modo - 3 of your x players for the right mid spot are naturally left-sided. And you've got Nicol at LB, which he could do but he was first and foremost a RB. I suggest your side lacks a bit of balance...

Looking at my side again, it shits goals apart from Hansen and Souness...both of whom chipped in enough from their positions.

This isnt the greatest liverpool 11 but its my favourite 11 that ive seen play (on tv)

-----------------------Reina------------------
Johnson-----Hyypia-----Agger-------Riise
------------Hamann---------Alonso----------
Luis Garcia------Gerrard-----McManaman
---------------------Torres--------------------

Nicol did play on the left alot during the late 80s.
I meant Ray Kennedy.
I'm choosing the best player, not thinking of balance.

Carra has played left and right back for us but most would recognise him as a CB...same as Nicol at RB.

And the thread is about the best side, not the best 11 players so balance does matter.

Alright best side? 87-88

Grobbelaar

Ablett Hansen Gillespie Nicol

Whelan McMahon Molby Barnes

Aldridge Beardsley

Subs: Hooper, Venison, Houghton, Johnston, Walsh

That's the best most balanced side I've seen. Why include Gerrard etc?
OK, OK replace Grobbelaar with Reina.

I see the teams here and it makes me feel as if footy started in the 19670s! Sorry Dylan, I was reading again! 😛

You mean live as in live TV? Or live as in sitting on the stands. In that case, Traoré would make my team.

I was around during Nicol's time and TBH I don't remember him being thought of as a RB particularly. He played RB, LB, RM, LM and for a whole season CB with equal distinction. As it happens I too would pick him at LB because (a) he has to be in the side, (b) he was as good at LB as he was anywhere else and (c) by contrast there are candidates for the RB slot who weren't as good elsewhere - my pick would be Babbel, just ahead of Rob Jones.

My idea of the line-up would be:

Reina

Babbel Lawrenson Hansen Nicol

Callaghan Gerrard Souness(capt.) Barnes

Dalglish Rush

Subs: Ray Clemence, Rob Jones, Alec Lindsay, Sami Hyypia, Peter Thompson, Peter Beardsley, Kevin Keegan

I taught the lad all he knew...

Apropos Nicol, he could play anywhere across the back or middle with distinction but for me, he was a RB.

Why is McManaman anywhere near people's elevens? The moneygrabbing, forever pointing in pointless directions, inconsistent twat.

Young people is the answer Mark. Young people.

He's a fucking big I am, I hate the whole era and how players have come out of it with platitudes that they don't deserve. McAteer gets ripped more than most of them and he was one of the few who gave his all, actually looked like he gave a fuck and had his career mercilessly ruined by being played in a role that was totally uncomfortable for him. Worst thing was, throughout Evans' reign we needed a defensive midfielder and he probably could have done the job had he been played there from the off.

GRRrrrrrrr. Macca can go fuck, when you needed him most he was Mr Invisible.

Although 95/96 was one of our most enjoyable trophyless seasons in terms of football played. The cup final excepted.

It was yeah, but I can't help but think that it was symptomatic of the club at the time, it was all show and no output, we were more concerned with how hip we were off the pitch and how good looking we were, when in reality as a team we were bollocks. We used to laugh at Newcastle and how they were great going forward but soft as shite at the back, we weren't much different.

I loved the way Fowler played that year. The 3 against Villa in the league, the 2 against Villa in the Cup, the 2 against the Mancs home and away etc etc.

The second goal v Villa in the Fa Cup semi is one of my all time faves. On the chest, left foot volley, in off the post, game over!

McAteer was unfortunately just one of a number of good players whose careers went to sh!te after they joined us at that time.

I remember an interview at the time and a fan saying about Carra (who was just coming through) that he was was scared we were going to ruin him, like we had with a few players. I'm not saying McAteer was anything special in comparison to the others, because he wasn't, but I always had a soft spot for him because I thought Evans ruined him.
