Griezmann deleted the photo from his Twitter account before posting an apology
Atletico Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann has apologised after initially telling his social media followers to "calm down" in response to outrage he sparked by painting himself black as part of a fancy-dress outfit.
Griezmann tweeted a photo of himself dressed as a black basketball player.
He later deleted the post, along with a second message that read: "Calm down everyone. I'm a fan of the Harlem Globetrotters and this is a tribute."
A third message contained his apology.
It read: "I recognise that it was insensitive on my part. If I have offended some people I apologise."
On Friday, a bookmaker was widely criticised for a social media post in which it praised a man who had painted himself black and dressed up as Labour MP Diane Abbott at the PDC World Championships darts tournament.
Star Sports Bookmakers has apologised.
David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, was among those to criticise Griezmann.
He wrote on Twitter: "There are so, so many different options for an 80s party, or a night out at the darts for that matter, that don't involve blackface.
"I can't believe we're out here in 2017 saying don't dress up in blackface."

If he had just donned the Globetrotter kit without 'blackfacing' he wouldve been accused of appropriating black culture.

Schoolboy error from Griezmann but clearly not meant with any malicious intent.

I do understand that the practice of "blackface" has been regarded as demeaning at times and it's obviously right that that aspect shouldn't be perpetuated nowadays, but this had sod all to do with any of that. If it's forbidden even to express admiration for black performers by dressing up as them, things have gone too far.

For you to say that obviously means you don't understand the absence of insulting and/or abusive language which make reference to race and/or ethnicity means he is not being racist.
Where did i call him a racist, i said he's an idiot.

Abusive? Check.
Reference to colour? Check.

I'm afraid that it appears to me that you might be a racist.

As usual its done in the stereotypical way...big afro with black shoe polish. He's an idiot.

On the upside, this will hopefully make his transfer to the scum somewhat awkward to pull off.

That's true in any event. What's worrying is how he made it so far out of his house as to be photographed in public, without anyone he knows or lives with asking him if he was fucking serious.
This is Spain. Like they give a shit. Del Bosque called Henry a black shit and no one even blinked an eye over it.

Although I do agree that he's a dick for doing this, I guarantee that 90% of the outrage is coming from white people delighted they have something to be outraged about.

This view always surprises me. Are you part of that 90%?

As a white man, I think this is a bit fucking stupid from griezmann, and he's a fucking twat for doing it

There were/are white Harlem Globetrotters, so blackface wasn't necessary if he was doing a tribute to the team.

You would have him pay tribute to the minority of white players, and ignore the black players? That would probably have caused more vociferous outrage.

The whole speculation of there being equal controversy if he just wore the kit is just astounding.
Black people view it as demeaning and being from France he should know that.

At what point did the term "Blackface" become part of the vernacular? I'm not asking about the physical act of "blacking-up", which has obviously been going on since men first donned their tights and walked onto a stage, I'm talking about the actual word "Blackface". All of a sudden it's a thing. The term for a white bloke dressing up and applying makeup, to look black, has always been known as "blacking-up" or maybe I once again find myself a victim to the Mandela Effect. (no pun intended).

You're right

Probably best he didn't do it full stop

Black people do not have issues with a White man wearing a Harlem Globetrotter kits and taking pictures. The Globetrotters rely on people buying their merchandise don't care who buys it and wears it, as long as they don't blacken up (just be yourself, you fucking idiot).
I've seen plenty of white people donning the Kit and some even wearing Afro's which was typical in the 70s at the height of the Globetrotters fame

Would it be considered racist to dress up as Griezmann dressed up as a black face Globetrotter to take the piss out of him for being so stupid?

He's not merely wearing a replica kit, he's obviously in fancy dress, so is required to specifically dress as someone. Either choice was going to incur criticism. Perhaps he should have picked a team with no black players in it, regardless of whether he liked them or not. Similar to how you answered 'non' to everything in your French oral exam regardless of how many pets or siblings you have.

That picture is hilarious. The smile just makes it.

I'm always amazed that people react with such surprise at the inevitable backlash. You just can't step out the house like that.
