As much as seeing Robben and Van Persie smiling makes me want to cut my eyes out with a rusty teaspoon, watching Dirk epitomise everything that is still good about football during this WC has restored some of my faith in humanity. Holland would not have got this far without him.
Everything about the man is class.

From his twitter feed:
29-06-2007 my father passed away. 29-06-2014 I played 100 caps and we reach the quarterfinals @worldcup.29th of June a day I never forget!!

25 years ago 96 poeple never came back. Always in our hearts and never be forgotten#jft96

Kuyt, it's fair to say, has played a surprisingly big role in the Oranje's progress to the semifinals. He's been a starter in their past three games and should feature again against Argentina on Wednesday.

The Fenerbahce striker has never been the sort of forward that the Dutch truly appreciate. His game is based on effort, endurance and positional intelligence. As a centre-forward, he's always had better players ahead of him and on the flanks; various coaches have preferred true wingers. Kuyt has been a different sort of specialist: a defensive wide forward. At club level, Rafael Benítez used him most effectively in that hybrid role during his time at Liverpool (2006-2012) -- "Mr Duracell," the Spaniard used to call him.

Under Marco van Basten, Kuyt played very well on the right in a counter-attacking 4-2-3-1 Dutch side at Euro 2008. At the World Cup in South Africa two years later, his work rate contributed, as Bert van Marwijk's well-organised but largely uninspiring side made it to the final. His involvement in Poland/Ukraine 2012, where internal rifts and poor performances resulted in an early exit, only amounted to 12 minutes in two substitute appearances.

Few expected the veteran from Katwijk aan Zee, a small city on the North Sea coast, to see so much action in Brazil, but perhaps we should have known something was up after one of the training sessions prior to the opening game against Spain. Van Gaal had requisitioned Kuyt from the reserves to train with the first team forwards in Estadio da Gavea -- as a defender.

Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Robin van Persie and a couple of others always outnumbered a two-, three- and four-men defence marshalled by Kuyt as the main centre-back, but they hardly got behind them to score any goals. Kuyt's men were too well positioned. The Dutch media later reported that since May van Gaal had been practising with the former Feyenoord man in various defensive positions.

It's easier to list the positions he hasn't played at this World Cup. Apart from goalkeeper and the centre of defence, Kuyt has featured everywhere on the pitch for van Gaal. Against Mexico in the round of 16, Kuyt was used in four different roles by the 62-year-old coach. "He is fantastic; he is ready for everything, from the first to the last second," Kuyt said about van Gaal after the penalty win over Costa Rica.

Bloody love Dirk. Loved his debut sub appearance vs West Ham i think when he was just taking pot shots from all over the pitch!

I'm surprised the tobacco industry hasn't sought to exploit his name. How anyone can puff through the ciggies and still get through the running he does is amazing. Great bloke.

He's a smoker?! Wow - imagine how much he'd be able to run if his lungs weren't half full of Tar!

Thank you @Silver Sean for starting a Kuyt appreciation thread.

I almost started one a few days ago but figured I would take some stick for it 😉

Dirky is having a hell of a tournament, and playing as a wingback of all things!

That Netherlands/Mexico game really was Dirk Kuyt in a nutshell. Started as a left wingback and didn't look out of place in the slightest and was doing his typical amount of running in the bit of the pitch that was in direct sunlight. Second half he is switched to right wingback when Depay came on and is again in the searing heat as opposed to the shaded side of the pitch which he would have been in 2nd half had he remained at left beck. Never stopped running. Towards the end of the game he was moved further forward in an advanced role and was involved in a lot of the attacking play around the box. You could really see how much it meant to him when Sneijder smashed in the equalizer and Dirk dropped to his knees on the spot in relief.

I thought Kuyt was good again against Costa Rica in his wingback role and his penalty in the shootout was an absolute peach. Low burner into the side netting, just inside the post. Unstoppable.

Long live Dirk Kuyt.

I loved the fact that the penalty was so perfect it just stopped on the corner, spinning against the netting.

Sublime.

Juuuuust inside the post, I would like to think he was aiming that precisely but he was probably a bit lucky it didn't hit the woodwork.

I'm not especially rooting for Holland to win the whole thing because a month and a half of gloating from Van Gaal and United fans would be unbearable but for Kuyt's sake I hope they win it.

As he went to take it I said 'He will score. Low bottom left.'
And lo, it came to pass.
I also called both Costa Rica misses. I was watching with 5 friends who care fuck all about football, and know even less. I appeared as to them a God!

Dirk is so honest. That word epitomises him. I dream of a world of Dirks - hard working, honest, reliable, and smiling. Bring him back on a Freebie 😉

Knowing the character of the man, I just can't see him going to Utd. He'd rather move elsewhere.
