Had his first game for Liverpool today and looked like he was there all his life. Very impressed with his 45 minutes even though it was as left back. Can't wait to watch him for us next season. Don't care that he cost 17million, that price will soon be forgotten as the season kicks of.

As encouaged as I was by his debut I do feel like our centre halves are going to have to be that more aware this season. Not just from johnson...but if insua plays more games too. Both have tendancies to go forward a lot (which is great), but they do get caught at times, but this is where mascher and alonso come into the puzzle. And although mascher must be a definate to stay at this stage we really need another player like alonso if he goes.....sometimes his break up of play is underrated/over shadowed by his passing.

johnson is quality, imho he is easily the best right back in the country all we need is insua to step up a level on the left and all our past worries of width will be over.

Looking forward to our next friendly already to see how Johnson gets on. Nice to have a full back who has the confidence and ability to go at defenders.

Excellent post and I agree with all of it, but I'm confident Rafa has factored the points you make into his thinking, as he seems to want us to carry on with the attacking stuff we were playing last season from the Real CL tie onwards, so he knows we'll have to resolve these questions. I doubt he'd have bought a fullback as attack-minded as Johnson in the first place if that hadn't been his intention.

On a less serious note, how soon before Johnson becomes just Glen to the fans?

For example, Alonso is affectionately referred to as Xabi, same for Dirk, Pepe, Stevie, Jamie and so on.

Takes 2 years to be on first-name terms.

...Unless you're amazing.

Ooh don't know. Pepe (Although its his nickname) got it within months, same with Xabi and Co.

2 or 1 syllable names which seem to have a harsh pronunciation on each syllable seem to work. XA-BI, STE-VIE, JAI-ME, etc. Whereas Glen is just a bit of a "meh" name. Can't say it with any passion without sounding gay. Same with Martin, and Alvaro is just a bit too much. Mascherano could get it with a shortened Javier, but then its sound like Javi/xabi, so Mascher works just as well.

Thats my guess anyway

I guess

But Arbeloa's still Arbeloa, ditto Skrtel.

Fuck knows.

Some names work, some don't. It's as simple as that. Martin, and Alvaro or Javier don't.

Agree with Fabio, it will be thought to say Glen in affectionate and passionate manner without sound gay. I'm sure we'll hear Gerrard saying it in a post match interview very soon.

Cue GKMacka!

"ooo Glen put in a superb tackle in our box in the second half"

Martin just doesnt suit Skrtel, his mum should've named him Killer On The Loose or something.

Spot on young windy.

He had a very decent run out.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he and Insua can impact on our overall play this season.

I swear that's what Tomkins said in regards to the signing of Bellamy, Pennant and Speedy..
