Glen Johnson is a world class right back and we are extremely lucky to have him in the squad .

Or he can implement his philosophy and then just bring in players that fit into that style like how other top managers do it. That way we don't have to keep chopping and changing our style of play. And in this system Johnson is awesome. Just wonder where kelly will fit in when he's fit again. Guess he'll be backup.
 
So we're back to the same point, when Johnson doesn't have to defend he's very good.


God if only there was a solution to that
 
If you're going to suggest him as a winger, then don't.

And the cant defend bit is so horrendously wrong.

I also think Glen is a great player however why are we extremely lucky to have him playing full back for us? We spent seventeen million pounds on the lad.

Because world class players are not by any means a guarantee even if you splash £17M and upwards.

Let me know if you want a few examples to prove the point in hand. 🙂

He's been a steal in terms of value for money over the years.
 
By far one of the best attacking fullbacks in the world. Not exactly a brilliant defender, can just about do enough, but makes up for it.
 
He's fucking brilliant.
BRILLIANT.
He makes no more mistakes at the back than any other full back in the premier league yet offers MUCH more going forward.
Hes a fucking worldy and one of only a couple in our team.
After Suarez he is our best player.

I would have thought that the better option personally - imagine trying to explain a hooker turning up on your doorstep to the wife !

A massive yes.

I actually think it's the presence he brings when going forward that highlights any deficiencies he has at the back.

I know he makes mistakes - as Oncy says, they all do. But Johnson draws attention to himself by being so heavily involved in games - his attacking prowess makes him a focus of the match and that means any mistakes he makes are remembered as well.

If Downing took the game on the way Johnson does we wouldn't have wasted 17m last summer.

I said this a while back. But whether it's a lack of confidence, or plain inability, Downing just hasn't managed to show that bit of spark needed to make him into a decent player. Johnson, on the other hand is superb going forward. Yes, he does make mistakes at the back, but so does some of the best full backs in the premiership. Playing full back is a position that really shows up the player's weaknesses.

EDIT: I feel dirty comparing Johnson and Downing. The two should never be mentioned in the same sentence.
