Glen Johnson.

Most of our games this season Johnson has been our most prolific, consistent attacker behind suarez, yet people complain about him constantly.

He's perhaps our only true world class player still in form/fitness (Stevie isn't) bar suarez, yet most fans see him as a liability, it baffles me.

He's been outstanding now for most of this year. You know my thoughts on his defending, so we'll leave that there, but he's been dominant as an attacker and clearly loves that slightly more advanced role under Rodgers.

What a surprise people finally realising what a cracking player he is.

Most people have always said he's a cracking player, his defensive play over his career has largely been hit and miss, he was piss poor in that respect just under a week ago at Spurs, so let's not pretend he's suddenly become this excellent player who can also defend.

GlenJo has always been a cracking player going forward. We've always known that. However, to pretend that he's a top defender is folly... He's not. He's not much worse at that part of the game than many of his peers, though. And, although he's been outstanding again for quite a while now - and long may it last - doesn't mean that he wasn't utterly awful for a decent spell 18 months or so back... Always cracks me up how polarizing GlenJo is to this site.

When the opposition are on the verge of scoring, his defending is usually brilliant and saves us. It's just other times he looks clueless but in reality there is not much harm done from his stupidity. Leaving someone free to lump a predictable cross toward the back post is hardly the end of the world in the game.

Hes never been awful.
Hes ALWAYS been one of our best performers.
And he IS a cracking defender.

Eat my facts losers.

Yeah, a cracking defender who went in with a half arsed tackle against Sunderland (?) allowing them to score, or gave Gareth Bale the freedom of the city for the first 20 minutes last week.

He's a great player, excellent going forward and, as Dantes said, can come in with the occasional last ditch tackle. But as said, he can get the fundamental basics of defending horribly wrong and it undoes all the good work he puts in to the attacking side of his game.

Brilliant player who's much improved the defensive aspect of his game but has a chronic flaw that sees him go to sleep at key moments that DO cost us.

Qft. I'm sick of hearing 'he can't defend'. It's bollocks.

He's ASKED to get forward, therefore he isn't always in the position people want a left back to be, 9 times out of 10 he is though. Were he asked to simply defend he'd be there every time. You can't have both, that player does not exist.

He's fucking quality & the amount of goalscoring chances he's involved in, the pressure he puts on the opposition, world class wingers he keeps in his pocket & amazing tackles he makes just prove it.

This is one of those threads - like some of the Lucas ones - where the guys that don't like the player in question or have ripped the living fuck out of him before come along appearing to be all reasonable about him through gritted teeth. And when that next dip in form comes along he'll revert to being a useless cunt again.

Why bother posting anything at all?

That's bollocks too, his defensive inability is rarely down to him being at the other end of the pitch, it's usually for leaving his brain at home and having stupid lapses in concentration, cf the goal against Sunderland, cf not waking up from the off against Spurs.

Spot on.

I've always hugely rated Johnson, even through the Kelly fap and Johnson bash fest ~2 years ago. You've got it completely right about his defending, it's not awful in the slightest, it's good infact, just look at the euros, he was by far the best defender there, much better than ebjt. The only real weakness he has in his defending is occasional positioning and as such he makes occasional cock ups but no more than any other defender, unfortunately he's always slated as if he does it every week, in my eyes, and I've thought this for the last three years, he's the best right back in the league.

He was Mystic, I don't think he's a bad defender in that he 'can't' defend, he's reasonably good in the air when called upon too. My issue with him has always, ALWAYS been his concentration levels which I do think can be poor and I don't think it's as dismissible as some posters make out because his slackness has and does cost us goals. I'm not saying he's alone and there are many top defenders who make mistakes, it's the nature of the game. He's come on leaps and bounds though over the last year and his defending has been vastly improved, if he can cut out the odd moments or appearing docile and build on the fact he's now so called peak age then he can, at this moment and time, be what his potential always suggested he could be.

Not that I'm aware of, but it's quite odd it seems to have been discussed for years without it being tried.
