ATHENS, Greece — Greek soccer player Giorgos Katidis has been banned from his national team for life after giving a Nazi salute while celebrating a goal in the topflight league.

Greece's soccer federation said Sunday in a statement that the AEK Athens midfielder's gesture "is a deep insult to all victims of Nazi brutality."

The 20-year-old Katidis gave a Nazi salute after scoring the go-ahead goal Saturday in AEK's 2-1 victory over Veria in the Greek league. He pleaded ignorance of the meaning of his gesture – right arm extended and hand straightened. He claimed on his Twitter account that he detests fascism.

AEK and the Greek league are considering separate sanctions. AEK fans have demanded Katidis' dismissal from the team.

Katidis has played for Greek national junior teams but not the senior side.

It seems pretty ridiculous to claim ignorance in this case, looks pretty deliberate to me.
 
He said he was simply pointing to a teammate. Look at the picture again. Who the fuck points like that? 🙂))

Tattoos don't help his case either.
 
I might be wrong on this but I can fully believe that a 20yr old doesn't understand that gesture properly.

Seems a bit long term that punishment, Dildo Di Canio did it and got a short ban or something like that and Alan Shearer got away with it every week....

He is just an idiot. But then most present day Nazis are. Should be noted that he had a 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' tattoo, a 50 Cent reference.

Oh, he's one of these quiz show types who moan 'It's before my time' when asked anything, like, "historical". I'd ban all of those regardless.

That reminds me of the time when a former friend of mine (about 25 then) came over to me quietly and asked me what the holocaust was because people talking about it and she didn't understand. These people exist and that's why I'm inclined to think this guys story could be believable.
 
Since when did Greeks become a part of the Arian race?

I know, and I also know that there are Nazi groups in Russia and other countries as well.
You know as a black person I have to keep myself updated regarding this stuff since I have to know where I can't go on holiday.
For instance you'll never see me in Bulgaria or any of the east European countries.

If he says no, he's probably in my boat ... i've never even seen Schindler's List. I can't watch these things anymore - it's my family's history, on both sides, and it makes me so fucking mad ... and i don't need that anger in my life.

That I did (not really a 'holocaust movie' though) - the opening scenes made my wife cry as her grandmother's family survived Poland for two years hiding like that (though their hiding spot vertical, not horizontal). My friend's grandfather did that shit in Germany with the US Army - not like the movie portrays it exactly though.

I grew up there and have to admit it would be an odd place to go on holiday. Large Asian community. Friendly and tolerant place. I'm sure it has its share of dickheads, but no more or less than most places.
