According to Spanish newspaper AS and Gilleme Balagué Michael Laudrup was offered the role as Assistant Manager in Liverpool in Summer.

Christian Purslow contacted apparently Laudrup last Summer to offer him the job as Assistant Manager for Roy Hodgson. And Laudrup would've been offered a rather big influence although Hodgson was the gaffer.

As Laudrup rejected the offer and took the one as manager for AS Mallorca instead, Mauricio Pellegrino was offered the same job but as the case with Laudrup, he rejected the offer as well.

Had either Laudrup or Pellegrini taken the job they'd probably be our manager today.

Everyone on here knows my allegiance towards Laudrup and how much I'd love to see him as manager for Liverpool one day but to be perfectly honest I wouldn't swap him with Kenny at this day and age.

Perhaps Laudrup would like to join as Assistant Manager now the King has been re-instated?

*gets all dreamy eyed*

assistant to roy? no wonder he turned down the job.

Yeah it was some rather cheeky phone-calls from Purslow wasn't it?

Laudrup and Pellegrino felt disrespected by the offer it would have ruined their cv's worked as assistant to Roy Hodgson . :-[

I absolutely detest guillem balague.

Hardcastle likes this

Assistant?

That's a bit shit. 🙁

Not sure about Pellegrino though; the reports then suggested that both Pellegrino and Hodgson were interviewed for the Managers job with Hodgson being preferred. That in itself sounds crazy though.

Mauricio Pellegrino and Manuel Pellegrini are not the same person. Which doesn't change the fact that Ballague is probably full of shit again

Is Laudrup Danish then?
[/quote]

We like to say he is Scandinavian

I really respect Purslow in many ways. He did well with the H and G saga, and he did "get us", as a lifelong red. BUT, he seems to not have the best football judgment at times - and didn't realize it...

Re: Gillem Balagué: Laudrup rejected Liverpool in Summer

If that was true of Purslow, how true was it of Parry? Purslow also brought in the massively improved sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered, and let's not forget that the King also supported Hodgson out of those who were interviewed after he himself had been turned down.

I wonder if this may be a clue to the value (if there is any) of having a DOF. He's there to take the kind of more football-related judgments which the CEO/MD will otherwise take, but to do so with - one hopes - more football knowledge behind him. Whether this applies to Comolli is moot.

Why would any of those managers want to be an assistant to Roy is beyond me?

Purslow got Roy's appointment wrong!

I assume any such appointment would have been offered with a clear guarantee that they'd take over from Roy in two or three years. Even so, I agree it wasn't well thought out by Purslow (and Broughton).

Avvy, there's no doubt about that. Appointing Kenny was a very smart move by Henry and Werner.

Apparantly they also approached Pep Gaurdiola for the job of chief scout.

thnks for the laugh. @JJ - tremendous job on getting standard chartered involved, and many other commercial successes that happened. BUT, between Laudrup as assistant, and Roy as manager, I can see how perhaps Rafa REALLY didn't enjoy having his judgement foisted on him. I'm sure he wished (my friend) Parry was back at times! 😉

Kenny's appointment has thus far been an incredible shot in the arm. Fingers crossed we get a few wins to keep the train running on time...
