Well I guess Klopp told him that he won't be given a chance to play with us.

Gerrard: 'I feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be'

Sounds like he has had an offer of some kind.

He couldn't cope with the pace of the premier league before he left us and regressed further at LA Galaxy. It would have been a disaster trying to get him to play for us again.

good for him.

my favourite ever player , the scorer of my favourite ever goal ,the best player I've seen in person .

Him retiring makes me feel old though

a bit of a different compilation but he made fair, crunching tackles better than any player id seen before.

although I imagine many of these would be insta-reds today..

It's quite unusual for our top players to announce their retirement. Many of them just seem to stop. I don't think Kenny ever actually said he was finishing. Did Rush? Fowler didn't.

Anyway, hopefully now Gerrard can get started at the Academy.

I'm not sure if they announced it or not but back in those days didn't a testimonial pretty much spell the end of a players career?
Also with the exposure players get through the internet and social media it just becomes a whole lot bigger.

Amazing player! For me (having never really followed the youth team) he came out of nowhere and absolutely smashed it from day one. A great memory for me was when I first recognised what a talent he was. He was filling in at right back (I know) He absolutely owned the position - Crunching but clean tackles followed by inch perfect 30 yrd passes. Rightly a proper legend. I bet he'll end up as a pundit on BT.

We always had a chance no matter who we were playing with Stevie on the pitch.
More often than not he played the role of 4 players on the team.
We'll probably never see a better player come through the system again.
Fuck I wish he was 20 again.

Maybe it's a more modern phenomenon?

I think I saw Kenny's last playing appearance for Liverpool. He was still player/manager but hadn't set foot on the pitch all season until we'd won the league, then he brought himself on in the last game at Anfield.

Maybe Derby? QPR? Gary Gillespie maybe scored? Memory is a bit hazy

I think we won 1-0 or something, but Kenny spent his few minutes on the pitch barking orders and pointing. And didn't actually move at all.

Yep. I was there too. He came on a sub. 1-0 against Derby.

Steven Gerrard is the definition of the modern footballer. A team eleven of Steven Gerrards would beat a team of eleven anyone else. I'm so glad he was a scouser and he played for this club. Sensational talent and a true legend of the club. I hope he is as successful in the next stage of his career and makes smart choices regarding his progression.

A player who defined Liverpool for me since I started following them in 2004. He was playing a different game to everyone else – the spaces where you normally build up attacks were his regular goal-scoring spaces. Everything he did, every touch and every shot, was filled with unstoppable drive and desire to win. He has provided so many moments of sheer delirious joy to millions of LFC's supporters, but towards the end had to endure some excruciatingly hard knocks as well. There is no one like Steven Gerrard and I doubt there will ever be.
