Gerrard reached 30 last May. I think he should adapt his game for the long haul

I'm sure he'll be wanting to figure out a way of getting at least 5 more seasons at the top level out of himself. I reckon he should try to become the central midfielder he thinks of himself as and become more of a Molby, that way he could continue to play for years and we could build the forward line ahead of him. If he's going to listen to anyone it will be Dalglish.

God knows if that's what either of them think but I know if I was in charge I'd be asking him to forget about thundering forward and taking every dead ball like the manager's kid would in Sunday league, and focus on the centre of the park, breaking up the opposition and distributing the ball. He's clearly extremely fit and could probably maintain a central role for a long time if he put his mind to it.

We'd be in the enviable position of having a DM that could actually pass, and it would take all the pressure off the attacking players. Likewise, when we played crap sides he could lessen the defensive work and get forward.

It is a fair point and one that I've often thought about. I do think that he has at least two more seasons left in him to play as an attacking midfielder - one who bombs forwards and shits goals and assists.

If there's one thing he deserves, it's the Ballon D'Or. And he will if we win the league in the nex 2-3 years. How I hope it happens.

He can then become Molby or whatever he wants to be.

I thought this was why you've been banging on about Gerrard in front of Ming.

He cant do it for very much longer and we should use him there while hecan play there.

Well spotted.

Gerrard in front of Ming doesn't work. Ming is a shithouse who is clearly suited to being a slighty upgraded Luis Garcia.

In front of Ming meaning in front of Ming and a DM, rather than Ming in front of Gerrard and a DM.

Nah I reckon he's fine where he is, Totti is 34 now and plays in a similar position and scored 25 goals last season. Scored 5 this but I reckon he can still do a job as a second striker right up till he's 35.

I think Kenny should just tell him to do as he pleases. Go where he likes, roam and do whatever he can to win games.

That to me means.
Raul and a DM behind him and Gerrard roaming in a 4-3-3.

Now we just need to sort out the DM and the left and right bits of the front three.

Yes, this. For now.

What Krump says, however, will be a valid concern 2-3 years from now.

The thing is, there's an abundance of attacking players who can play off Torres. For the team's sake as well as his own Gerrard should be making sure Lucas doesn't start.

So what is Suarez et al for then? And where's this DM? Does he exist?
[/quote]

What Oncy said. Suarez, if he signs, will be played as a wide forward.

This is how I see it.

-----------Meireles----DM
----Suarez---Gerrard---N'zogbia
-----------------Torres

Yeah but

-----------Meireles----Gerrard
----Cole/Maxi/Kuyt---------N'zogbia
------------Suarez
-----------------Torres

Is bettererer.

Like this mate in Theory

------------------------Raul-------------------DM-----------------------
------------------------------Gerrard-----------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
El Wingo------------------------Torres---------------------------El Wingo

Gerrard will play CM when he loses his legs.

For now let him do as he pleases and get us the results.

Mate, I don't want Lucas to start. If the alternative is Lucas, I'd have Gerrard at CM.

But it's quite clear that if we have two competent CMs (who can tackle and pass - and I do believe Meireles is one), Gerrard should be played off Torres, or in a free role in the final third. He's just too good an attacking player for him to play anywhere else. I did a post some while back on the pre-eminent attacking players of the last decade (criteria being over 50 goals and 50 assists, and at least one 20 goal, 15 assist season). Gerrard was one of 8 players on the planet who qualified. The others were Henry, Ronaldinho, Messi, Ronaldo, Totti, Lampard, Villa. That's how good an attacker he is. It's criminal to play him anywhere else. As long as you have competent players elsewhere, because let's face it, Gerrard will be better than almost any player you can put in any position.

All things being equal, Gerrard should have a free role. But where is this DM? The squad being what it is, he should be it. We'd win more games.
