GERRARD ON HIS WAY BACK

STEVEN GERRARD is poised to hand Rafa Benitez a huge fitness boost with an imminent return to full training.

Liverpool’s captain missed Wednesday night’s 2-0 win over Tottenham, as well as the draw at Stoke, after tweaking his hamstring in the FA Cup defeat against Reading.

It was initially feared Gerrard would spend a minimum of two weeks on the sidelines but he has responded well to treatment and his rehabilitation has gone without a hitch.

Benitez and his medical staff will continue to monitor his situation but, provided all goes to plan, Gerrard could be back on the training pitches at some point over the weekend.

With no FA Cup commitment tomorrow, the Reds are not due back in action until next Tuesday night when they face a Premier League trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Though it is unlikely Gerrard will be pitched into that contest, if things continue to go smoothly, it would open up the prospect of him being involved when Bolton Wanderers visit next Saturday.

Having received such good news over Gerrard, Benitez revealed today that Fernando Torres’ recuperation from knee surgery is also going as expected and he remains on course to return within six weeks.

Torres was operated on in Barcelona last Saturday by Dr Ramon Cugat after he was forced off during the first half of that crushing defeat to Reading with a twisted knee.

The Reds’ number nine has endured a troubled season in terms of injury and has had the threat of surgery hanging over him all through November after he was diagnosed as having a sportsman’s hernia – which is actually a groin problem.

Had he chosen to have it back then, he would have faced a three-week lay-off, so many will be wondering why he didn’t have a second procedure, given that he will not be back until March and still requires treatment on the problem.

But Benitez revealed it wasn’t necessary to pursue that option, as the strengthening work Torres has been doing – every day he has been working for four or five hours – has reaped benefits.

“The problem was with his knee and now everything is fine,†Benitez said. “Fernando has been talking with the doctor and it was better than they were expecting.

“It is still going to be five or six weeks before he is fit but all is good. Why did he not have the second (groin) surgery? Because the docto said he doesn’t need it.â€

Good news that our dynamic attacking midfielder will be back ahead of schedule. Hopefully our inspirational captain will make his return too.

I actually don't want him back super fast. (as long as we are winning)

Aquaman needs to establish himself in the forward role he is best in, as seen v Spurs.

It will give Rafa faith in him, and the the option of playing Gerrard slightly deeper with Mascher, and hopefully Riera and Maxi on the wings, transforming the team from defence minded to attack mined at a stroke!

I think that's the way it has to be.

I hope he's not rushed back, Aqui having a few great games will help that, so that once he's back he'll hopefully be back for a much longer period.

No doubt, no need to rush Gerrard back only to have him injured again in another game or two.

its without Dirk Kuyt when Torres comes back. I wonder if Rafa will finally think he has the quality to make Kuyt a squad player.

Rafa Benitez today revealed captain Steven Gerrard will be available for Tuesday night's trip to Wolves.

The skipper returned to full training this weekend after two weeks out with a hamstring problem.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "He was training on Saturday and then a full training session on Sunday, and today was the same.

"Normally he's someone who, if available, can play. We'll decide later but I think he can be available. We'll decide tomorrow."

Are there any rumors around that he was never injured and has now work out his differences with Rafa/Pellegrino?

Just a shot in the dark mind you.

We are winning without him and he has looked unfit/not arsed in a lot of games recently. There is obviously a big problem between him and Rafa, but then again you are talking about the kind of lad who takes a swipe at a DJ if he doesn't like the music so it's probably not that surprising. I would have thought that having two players at his level in the squad (Torres/Reina) would have put manners on him, but apparently not.

Gerrard needs to play better, simple as that.

Yeah, what did Gerrard ever do for us anyway?

Just read the last sentence realize he overplayed his hand on the rest and just wants more from Gerrard this season.

Just let the newcomer off with a simple "you're wrong", its about time.

Whatever - Gerrard blows and you know it.

Of course Gerrard should play if fit however it would nice if he raises the level of his play a notch or two.

Of course he should.

But it must be mentally exhausting having to singe-handedly drag Liverpool to respectability. Yet again.

I want Gerrard in midfield because he doesn't have to affect every play to be effective. He could score 10-20 goals (depending on pks, free kicks, corners all stuff that goes more with a team on form) from in midfield. Lucas usually looked pretty good with Gerrard in midfield also. Lets work on the Aqua in midfield thing in the summer we need 4th I think the Masch and Lucas midfield has a few very big wins over the scum to their name; Its the 0-0's and losses to dross I can't even fathom. Therefore If Aqua comes from a more technical league based on possession and creation against tight hard to break team he should obviously be playing up from against teams that do that! I hope I am right because honestly Aqua is just as effective as Alonso just from a different position. We still have the wings as a problems point but Rafa has finally gotten some players that are natural wingers, just not fast ones; the signing of Maxi the way we pushed that and Maxi pushed for freedom due to a WC year was masterful.

Ideally:

Against tight teams who want to defend

Masch
Gerrard

Maxi Riera
Aqua

Torres

bench: a with kuyt, yossi, n'gog babel if hes here

cup games and pl games against big teams ready to attack

Lucas Masch

Kuyt Gerrard Riera

Torres

bench, to throw on aqua, yossi, n'gog, babel if he is here

You know the obvious logical replacements based on form and fitness.

I couldn't do the defense. I can't drop Carra but we may need to in games with height as a weapon. There enough to worry this Liverpool supporter who has seen all those aweful set piece displays. Sotiris has been good and scored for us.

Aqua needs muscle before he can always be depended on.

Gerrard should rarely drop as deep as Mascherano.

Being pedantic here, but it really should be:

------------------------Torres
---Riera/Maxi-----------------------------Maxi/Yossi/Kuyt
---------------Gerrard--------------Aqua----------------
---------------------------Masher---------------------------

The development of a relationship between Gerrard, Aquilani and Torres is going to be crucial.

fluidity in motion, same thing a lot of the time hopefully. If we are attacking against Birmingham Aqua could probably spend most of his time running 15 yards behind Torres if we are scoring and defending properly, holding possession and all.

True, if we go such a way though Masher going to have to hold his position more frequently and resist the urge to be a 'destroyer' DM - otherwise we're going to be pretty vulnerable.

Yep, well you also need a reliable fullback on the other side of Johnson anyway. But when Mascherano is playing destroyer he needs cover. Which is why he can't really play destroyer when Gerrard isn't covering, hope he's smart enough to figure out when that one is. And continue doing it when Gerrard is covering.
