By the way, that 19-year-old Turkish kid, Kerim Frei, who came on as a sub looked pretty impressive. Lots of pace to burn and looked good with his ball control. Gave Johnson a challenge keeping up with his speed and changes in direction.

He caught my eye too. ever seen him before and he only played ~35 minutes but he did look impressive. Lots of pace, good control, trickery and lots of self confidence.
Where did they sign him from? Surely a bargain.

As an aside, what the fuck is the point of Robbie Savage? Why are the BBC giving him a platform to pretend he knows what he's talking about? His "expert" analysis is a fucking embarrassment.

As opposed to the rest of the 'pundits' on there? Personally, I'd quite happily never watch MOTD with volume on again (except for our games), as they're all a bunch of fucking idiots.

I think he joined as a 17-year-old from Grasshopper Zurich.

For me, that was probably his best performance for us in the last 2 to 3 seasons. The quick-fire hat-trick against Napoli was very impressive, but this was an excellent all-around game from him.

So what about Stewie? Has he bought himself an opportunity to prove himself? He's been really good in his last 3 or 4 games. Yesterday was easily the best I've seen him in a Liverpool shirt. A goal, an assist, and extremely unlucky not to have had another one. Personally I think he has what it takes. He just needs to sort his confidence (or whateer the fuck it is that's holding him back) out.

And BTW, I don't buy this bullshit that he's only upping his game because he's trying to prove his worth because he may be moving on.

It certainly is a good question... Probably the best wing performance we have seen from any red for a long time. He also set up a few good chances we missed aswell. I am not sure the manager knows what he wants....

Let's not forget the shit he's been serving up for the past 18 months. He's not good enough.

There has been times too, particularly in the last few weeks, where he's played well but still got a kicking off the usual culprits on here who can't give credit where it's due, because they've already made their mind up about the player, cf some of the idiotic comments earlier in this thread - "too late" and all that shit. He's performed quite well of late and showed yesterday that he can be a threat if you get the best out of him, Rodgers seemed to be hinting yesterday that having discussions with players like Downing and Enrique has been key to their upturn in form, maybe they just needed a different approach and perhaps it's just taken them time to find their feet in the system and overcome the initial "Oh fuck, I'm playing for one of the most demanding and prestigious clubs around".

Downing will be shit again next week and everyone will go back to being realistic again.

He certainly deserves credit for recent performances, and I hope they continue, but let's not pretend he has a future here. He might have bought himself a bit more time but I expect him to be gone by the summer. The best thing that can happen is for him to convince potential buyers that he's actually worth buying. Anything above £5 or 6 million now would be a genuine surprise.

Yeah I noticed that myself. To be honest, I'm one of his biggest detractors on here. I didn't like him before he signed, and I don't like him now. But he was great yesterday. I don't think we should look at the last few games and speculate that it may be an upturn in form. I fear that his recent good performances are the exception to his normal level. At least with Enrique we saw over a prolonged period that he had what it takes to be a good player for us. I think we'd be stupid to change our opinions on him - that have been formed over 18 months - for the sake of 2 or 3 decent games recently. As soon as/if we get a decent offer for him, get rid.

I don't really want to end on a negative, because he was great yesterday. So I won't mention how his celebration pissed me off.

I was being ironic. Or something.

Was that directed at me???

Well, fuck you and your goal Stewie....

Ha maybe it was. From my point of view, it was like he was telling the fans and us as supporters to shut up, as though he was turning out stellar performances every week and not being a shit house, but still getting criticism.

He has been rightly criticised, so I thought his celebration was a bit hard faced.

I thought it looked like he actually did the "shush" then realized "oh shit, what have I done" and improvised to show the "1" salute in a limp and pointless attempt to cover for that mistake.

Yeah, I thought the celebration was woeful as well. That said, his performance yesterday got the results it deserved. I think he's put in a number of very good performances in the past - certainly not consistently but some very good performances where his shots slipped 6 inches the wrong side of the post or his final ball put the ball on a platter only for Carroll or others to screw it up worse than Agger's effort.

He's not an 18m winger but he's a hell of a lot better than he's demonstrated (or been credited for) here at Anfield. I hope he manages to show that before he's shuffled on down the road.
