So what will we be playing next season? The same one, or a 4-4-2 or a bit of both?

If it's 4-4-2 would you rather have Torres/Kuyt or Torres/Jovanovic?

I guess if either of those are up front then the other could play on a wing with Maxi on the other (although I'm not so sure about him on the left).

Hopefully we make some nice buys obviously though as well.

Nice. Basic stuff, but that's what we've been saying all along.

Couple of points:

* I liked what he said about the forwards playing closer together, or support from the widemen - he was pretty much dead against isolating anyone in the team, especially the forwards/strikers.

* His comment about central midfielders having to be highly skillful.

Good stuff.

Having watched Brazil and Germany (and England) in the World Cup, I'm increasingly convinced that 4231 is, if anything, the better formation. Its success depends on the ability/willingness of the two widemen and the hole player to get into the box, but I do think we have the players to play that way - more so than we have for 442 (as neither Kuyt nor Jovanovic really has the touch and vision to be a proper no10).

So, working with the players we have now, I'd go for something like this:

Reina

Magic - Carra - Agger - Gaping Big Black Hole

Mascherano - Gerrard

Kuyt - Aquilani - Jovanovic

Torres

Ideally you'd want a bit more skill and pace on at least one of the wings, and a more robust and prolific player in Aquilani's position, but that's for the transfer market.

It's also pretty fucking clear that we need to buy at least one LB.

I don't think it seemed set in stone that it was a standard 442. He acknowledged that there may be a need in some instances to change the formation slightly based on the quality/strengths of certain players. And although he was talking about the forward two being close together, his main point was that whether they're alongside each other or one plays just off, when attacking they need to get closer together to play off each other. And when mentioning the wide players his point was that they must attack the defence.

So all in all, he didn't seem too stubborn about his preferred formation and seemed willing to be versatile about it.

He didn't seem stubborn about it at all. In fact, Fulham didn't really play 442 last season, did they? I thought Zamora was a lone striker most of the time.

Yeah I meant to ask this, I could only really think of Zamora as their main striker, and I know he had Davies, Dempsey and Duff in support didn't he?? :-\

I think it was:

----------------Schwarzer
Paintsil, Hughes, Hangeland, Konchesky
Gera, Murphy, Etuhu, Duff
--------------Dempsey
--------------Zamora

When defending Dempsey and Zamora would drop onto oppo centre mids and then 2 narrow banks of 4 behind them which sprang into quick counter attacks from deep

Great video.

I liked the fact he talked about getting me in the box, when the ball is in wide areas. Always bugged me with Rafa that we were often crossing to only one man in the box.

Hmmm . . . what with being a new regime and all, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about being a sure starter just yet fella
