West Midlands Fire & Rescue service has adopted a cunning strategy to ensure a more diverse workforce.
How do you reduce the amount of white male firemen? Easy! Make it harder for them to qualify!
"To reach their target of 60% of new recruits to be female, and 35% to be from black and minority ethnic groups by 2021, they have lowered the test requirements: women and men from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups only have to score 60% on verbal and numerical tests – where as white men have to score 70%."
A source said: "The sad fact is there are people sitting on fire engines today purely because of their gender or ethnicity and I don’t understand how any fire service leader is comfortable with that as an approach.’
This is frankly astonishing. It essentially means that if you're in a fire, you should hope that a white male fireman turns up, because he's had to reach a higher standard in order to become one.
