Figo. Was he any good?

He was one of Europe's best.

Sidebar: I got told,I was a Grassroots FIGO 10 years ago. Because I used to get my arse in the way, and you couldn't get the ball off me. I was on a higher for months after someone told me that 😉
 
While you're growing up watching British football at that time, the perception was always conveyed about how good McManaman and Giggs were as players. They were lorded and as a kid you fell for that initially. Up until you stumbled across Del Piero on Channel 4's Italian footy, and then Sky started showing Spanish football and you came across Figo... at that point I recall my thoughts were something like hey hang on a minute, what the fuck am I watching here? Figo is fucking insane... Giggs looks like a shit lower league player in comparison.
 
I loved Figo at Barcelona - he was the first player who I was completely in awe of for being able to have the ball stick to his feet like glue.
 
He was enourmous.... I loved to watch him at Barca. Played a lot right winger up against Roberto Carlos in his prime. That was a clash of giants.
 
Yeah, proper old fashioned right winger - I'm not a fan of the old stick-to-the-sidelines and cross the ball winger - but Figo was a joy to behold. Mesmerising skill, and could totally destroy a full back.

Joaquin was someone who I thought had similar potential.
 
Internationally he was often very disappointing. There were so many big games for his country when the pre-match hype was all about this being his breakthrough as a genuine great and then he had another ineffectual game. Compare that to Ronaldo and he's clearly at a lower level. In league games, he was at his best bossing it over lesser teams and players.
 
I remember when we were linked with him years ago (back end of his career) but I'm sure he went to a overseas club for millions a week???
 
Great player.

I always though he looked the creepy local from a Mediterranean party town who hung about on the main strip with his moped flirting with teens despite being mid 30's.

i think carragher said recently we were very close to signing him , Rafa thought he had him . that 'overseas club' was Inter .

I always remember this and it makes me laugh. The cockiness of the English CB's to drop off and not close him down and he just bangs it in the top corner from 30 yards.
