Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez set to bid for Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta
Last modified 18:34 16/08/09 By MirrorFootball

Rafa Benitez is ready to make a £10m bid for Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta.

The Liverpool boss sent scouts to watch the centre-half play against Espanyol on Sunday and is preparing to table an offer this week.

Benitez is desperate to end his hunt for a commanding defender and has already seen a £6m bid for Hull’s Michael Turner rejected.

Fulham star Brede Hangeland and Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross have also come under consideration but Benitez is now set to firm up his interest in Amorebieta, 24.

Bilbao will ask for at least £10m and Benitez will have to persuade American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to cough up the cash, with only two weeks left until the transfer window slams shut.

I like him. We were linked a year ago and i watched him a bit more because of that. Good player.

They wouldn't be able to take Ayala.

Amorebieta is good. A bit too good to be 4th choice (unless Dagger's well and truly fucked again), though he generally has one whopper of a mistake in him every game or two.

He should be able to handle himself over here then.

But if someone told me at the start of the summer that we were going to spend £27M on a RB and a CB, as well as lose Alonso, I'd have been gutted.

Unless Dagger's injury problems are worse than we fear, I think this is another misallocation of resources.

10 million pounds on defensive cover for a team like ours who more often than not find the attacking flair players out of our price range is not the best use of our funds.

We've got plenty of defenders.
We've got one forward.

I am getting so ticked off by this fact.

Thats the worrying part - why the hell would he have to persuade them??

That said - Rafa has signed more central defenders than anything - all of these kids, at least one of them should be good enough. If not, then why not?

Our squad is just woefully inadequate. Every summer we slated Parry and came up with all these excuses. However, Rafa has had everything his own way this time and its been arguable our worst for transfers since he got here.

As it's been said we don't need more central defenders. Certainly not for £10m. We need attacking options. Desparately.

Yep.

Good name and all that - Amoeba/Lovebeast - but this is surely not a £10m priority.

Spot on Sunny.

Agree with the first part but I dont think Rafa has had everything his own way by any means. He has lost Alonso and Arbeloa becuase both wanted to go and he hasnt been given the money raised to buy new players.

My understanding is that we are presently in profit with regards to our transfer dealings - if there is no money to build on last year then that's hardly the managers fault.

Another CB link:

"Liverpool have been quoted a price of £7million for Dynamo Kiev central defender Pape Diakhate.

Manager Rafael Benitez is keen to bring in another top stopper after a number of
injury worries and Diakhate caught his eye when he went to watch Senegal play this summer."

If we're planning on spending that sort of money on a CB, would we have been better off signing Bassong?

You can hardly blame Rafa for us having no money to spend.

And I don't think he'll ever top the Keane, Dossena, Degen window.

Probably. I think we need another centre back or its gonna bite us in the arse. My preference is Turner, and his performance against Chelsea proved that. He'll be expencive, but will solve several problems.

I was going to mention that too, but for some strange reason i decided against it.

OK fcuk it. It's just a matter of time someone will say it so let's just fcuking get it out of the way...

Sack Rafa !!

Limited funds, short of strikers and all he's fucking interested is in another defender.

Sack him !

followed quickly by 3 goalkeepers, a defensive midfielder and a complaint that we don't have enough money for an attacker.

Would love us to sign Nevin Subotic of Borussia Dortmund. He's a monster of a defender. Serbian. Think Vidic but bigger and better in the air. Comfortable with the ball at his feet too

Athletic Bilbao insist reported Liverpool target Fernando Amorebieta is not for sale.

The Venezuelan-born defender has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield of late, with Rafa Benitez keen to strengthen his squad before the transfer window slams shut.

The 24-year-old does have a clause in his contract which would allow him to leave his Basque employers for €30million (£26m), but Bilbao president Fernando Macua claims the Primera Liga outfit have no intention of discussing a deal.

"This player is not for sale and we have received no contact from Liverpool," he said.

"At this moment he is a key member of our squad and we have no interest in letting him go."
Paper talk

Reports had suggested that Liverpool sounded out Amorebieta during talks regarding Mikel San Jose's recent loan move to Bilbao from Merseyside.

However, those suggestions have also been strenuously denied.

The player's agent claims there has been no contact from Liverpool in regards to a possible deal and has branded the recent rumours as paper talk.

"Nobody from Liverpool has been in touch with me," he said.

"Because of that I believe this story is just a rumour made up in the papers."
