Feeling Optimistic (based on stats).

I've pinched these excellent stats from another site but looking at them one can't help but wonder what we are capable of with a fully fit Sturridge (fingers crossed but 6 months and no breakdown is promising), Karius expected to replace Mignolet (good keeper to have in reserve though), hopefully (and expectantly) a new strong and improved midfielder to replace Henderson, hopefully (and expectantly) a new LB to replace Moreno and of course now Matip at CB and Mane.

With the time Klopp and his coaching team now have to dedicate themselves to improving the team's tactics in pre-season, and without any Euro football this season (and our strongest competition all involved in the CL or EL), I'm feeling more and more optimistic as the new season approaches, regardless of the new mangers and players signed by other teams (all of whom will likely take time to establish themselves and bed in).

I thought we'd be battling for 4th, maybe Klopp has his sights set much higher.

Other teams are improving as well...therefore last season stats are useless.

Instead you would be better of taking the stats of the league winners of last five years and average them out to see what we were lacking last year.....I expect the Gulf to be very very big.

I think you totally missed the point of those stats ... and this thread. Though your suggestion of an average of the last 5 season really would be the epitome of futility.

Am I being wooshed about the futility of feeling optimistic by looking at meaningless stats?

I'm feeling a decent start followed by an unbeaten run ending in a game where we were the better team and a season littered with enough bad results to keep us somewhere around 6th.

That really depends on how you interpret the stats. Those laden with negativity will see nothing. Those of a more optimistic nature will see that we performed well in attack and that with the strengthening of our defence and midfield we could improve substantially this season.

LFC looks very much like the kind of "project" Klopp took on at Dortmund, and look what he made of that. It's the job he wanted, he and his coaching team now have their feet well and truly under the table with their new contracts, and a start's been made on reshaping the squad the way he wants it.

Bring it on. 😎

And we finished 8th yet were in the Top 4 of goals scored .. but only 6 goals behind 2nd.
I seem to remember we had 2-3 very high scoring games, vs Norwich, Citeh & Villa. That would make the goals scored a bit flattering.
Agree with your original point though that there is a sense of optimism to be derived from the stats. Now let's find a way to turn the optimism into trophies!

Every Top 8 team will have at least one or two of those in their own 'Goals For' column though. We're not exceptional in that regard.

That upper picture shows how much the 2013-14 season was a statistical anomaly in many ways. Those 26 (!) goals from set-plays were one big reason why we could challenge for the title despite a fundamentally poor defense. Both the number of goals and the conversion rate are off the charts. You could say there were reasons for it – most importantly Gerrard's set pieces were excellent that season, but that was an anomaly in itself, because he could not replicate anything remotely approaching this kind of efficiency in all his other years here. For most of his career our fans have been moaning about his set-pieces, particularly corners, and thought he should be in the box and let somebody else take them.

By contrast last season was our worst regarding set pieces – a testament to the absence of an aerially dominant CB (hopefully Matip changes that) and Mignolet's lack of command of the area and maybe some bad luck too. Whatever else happens, there is just no way we will be -8 in the set piece column at the end of next season. BTW part of the reason I'm so excited about the possibility of signing Coric is that he seems like a genuinely talented set piece taker – something we've been missing for many years.

Those stats indicate that Tottenham will be above us. We allready know that St Tottespurs day is the day that Tottenham in theory can't finnish above Arsenal. Arsenal doesnt win the league, they measure it a success being top four, normally number three or four.... Which gives these stats no reason whatsoever to be optimistic!!

What a silly reason to be optimistic, almost all those variables will change.

Did the stats from 13/14 make you look forward to 14/15?

Each season is a stand alone entity.

We'll do very well to finish top four but more than likely it'll be somewhere between 5th and 7th.

If you bothered to read the OP properly you'll have noticed that the reason for the optimism is based upon two things :

a) we don't need to improve substantially in attack (unless the other top 4-6 improve, highly unlikely they all will), though I've no doubt there will be some improvement and ...
b) the reason for our PL failure last season (and it can be said LC and EL too) was due in the main to our defence, which has already been strengthened and I'm confident we'll see an improvement to Moreno (even if only Gomez !) and in midfield, helping shield the defence.

Variables are what they are but the basis for our positive attacking stats last season is what is responsible for my optimism.

I've always been a glass half full type as far as LFC are concerned, pity you and others are half-empty types.

As for 13/14 to 14/15, WTF are you on about ? We lost Suarez, nobody was confident after his transfer, though had he stayed everyone here would have been looking forward to another run at the title !
