Liverpool line up summer move for £20m Napoli star

By Declan Taylor
Wednesday, February 9

Liverpool are ready to further bolster their attacking options by landing Napoli hitman Ezequiel Lavezzi in the summer.

The Reds sold Fernando Torres in January but splashed out £58m on Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
Now director of sporting strategy Damien Comolli has identified Lavezzi as the next striker on the club’s wish list.

The Argentina international has formed a lethal partnership with Edinson Cavani this season with the pair hitting 23 goals in 24 games between them in Serie A.
But, according to reports in Italy, Liverpool are now lining up a big-money bid for the 25-year-old who is valued at around £20m by Napoli.

Can't Lavezzi operate as a wing forward?

Hey, I'm up for converting Lavezzi to a winger instead of buying Young.

Lavezzi >>>>> Young x10

This put a smile on my face.

How does everyone know who we want to buy though? Did Kenny or Damien publish a hitlist?

I think Lavezzi is seen as suitable to our third row of three.

Yep.

With my strategy, the players won't just stand in these exact positions but can move about a bit depending on where the ball is and who has it. All the stats show that this can exponentially increase your chances of winning.

Lavezzi? Who the fuck is he?

Holy Comolli, what would we do without such a scout?

I have no idea who he is, but he has a name that of a wizard or mage, which makes me somewhat inclined to want him.

Not a bad player. But I don't think we can put him to good use.

We need out-and-out wingers.

Excellent player but a little too similar to Suarez for my liking. We need a proper wing-forward.

Well, he does operate wide of Cavani in Napoli's front 3 at the moment and he's an incredibly good player. He was quite impressive for Argentina last night too. But we've got Suarez already, I don't think we need him anymore. Something tells me we'll end up with Ashley Young soon.

1) Ezequiel Lavezzi is a an Argentinian striker currently playing for Italian side Napoli who has the nickname El Pocho, which means the 'chubby one'.

2) Born in Villa Gobernador Galvez, a part of Santa Fe in Argentina, he moved to Italian side Genoa in 2004 for a nominal fee of around £800,000 and was immediately loaned to Argentine side San Lorenzo. Whilst on loan Genoa became caught up with the infamous Italian match-fixing scandal and were relegated to the C1 (third league) of Italian football. Due to financial problems they sold him to San Lorenzo permanently.

3) Hailed as the 'The new Maradona' Lavezzi was bought by newly promoted Napoli for around £5million and immediately showed his worth by constantly putting in impressive displays for the club in the next season and scoring a hat-trick against Pisa.

4) This season Lavezzi has made a lethal partnership with Edinson Cavani with the pair racking up 24 goals in 23 games between them.

5) Napoli sit second in Serie A, three points behind AC Milan, it is thought they have a great chance of winning the title for the first time since 1990 which was during the Maradona era. The input of Lavezzi has not been overlooked, this season alone he has struck five goals and made ten assists.

6) Though Lavezzi was left out of the Argentinian 23-man squad for the World Cup last year, he has made ten international appearances, but when competing with Messi and Tevez it's not an easy position to get.

7) Napoli's resurgence in recent years has meant European football has been on the cards. After qualifying for the Europa League this year they went through second in the group stages behind Liverpool. They face Villarreal in the next round, which could be one of the ties of the tournament.

8) Lavezzi's performances against Liverpool in Europe may have been one of the opportunities for their Director of Sporting Damien Comolli to see the player in action. Comolli is rumoured to be very interested in bringing him in to strengthen the team with the other new signings Suarez and Carroll.

9) Chelsea narrowly missed out on the player in 2009, after his contract talks with Napoli were breaking down. It is estimated that Lavezzi only earns £1.5million a year, a move to the Premier League would ensure a huge pay-packet. But Liverpool aren't the only ones chasing, Manchester United and Real Madrid are also following the £20million man.

10) The Argentinian has many tattoos, including one of Maradonna himself (classy), but his ink supposedly caused a mafia murder, when two arch-rival artists both made claims some of his work was theirs

I don't think he's a 20M player though he'd be a decent signing at the right price.

I like the idea of a 4-3-3 though.
