Just for referencing and keeping track of the types of goals we leak, and the culprits (if any). I find it easier to have something to look at and read from than to recall from my memory.

For example, we know Skrtel and Agger have been poor in tracking their man and hence leaking goals this season - going back to look at the number of occasions this has happened shows they've been as bad as each other; and despite our poor defending at corners that regularly gives us heart attacks, we've actually only let in 3 goals directly from them surprisingly; the other that was scored indirectly was off a poor Jones punch out.

Also, I think someone posted a stat line from Opta Joe about Reina's mistakes directly leading to 8 goals, I wasn't sure whether that was an exaggerated figure, and wanted to relook at which occasions those were; turns out the stat line looks correct!

Stuff like that.

Also another observation is that, while our central midfield could use some improvement defensively, it seems to have improved a fair bit lately. Of course, a lot of the goals may start with the opponents having too easy a job moving the ball around, but no goals directly attributable to an unmarked man running into the box or opponents passing through our centre have been registered since the shocking defeat in mid-December at home to Villa.

The goals we've conceded since the Villa game have mainly been due to one or a combination of these factors:
1. Succumbing to pressure from a big strong target man
2. Not attempting to cut out crosses + slack marking at the far post
3. Poor marking/tracking of forwards in the box
4. Quality finishing
5. Goalkeeping errors

Is the drop in goals down the middle due to opponents targeting our other more glaring weaknesses or attributable to Lucas' quiet return (despite him not being at his best form yet) as well as Gerrard's and Henderson's improved form? Or is it just our luck that opponents haven't been shooting straight? We do not have a large sample of evidence of course, so this could well be just too simplistic an analysis to say that our defending in the centre has improved.

I read something addressing that earlier yesterday here:

The Truth About Pepe Reina’s Errors

Following Pepe Reina’s part in Sergio Aguero’s equaliser for Manchester City in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, this tweet was in heavy circulation:
Reina‘s mistakes cost Liverpool 14 points this season. Without those faults, Liverpool would be in the 3rd place. (via Opta Stats)
Fourteen points sounds like a hell of a lot, so I thought I’d investigate. As with many ‘facts’ floating around on Twitter, it proved to be hugely far from the truth.

Using the data from EPLIndex, I was able to establish that errors by Reina have, at most, cost Liverpool a mere three points this season, and that is based on the assumption that the result would have remained as it was if the error had not happened, which is obviously impossible to prove.

For the record, his errors that have lead to goals have occurred in the following matches:
Arsenal at home (the Reds would’ve still lost 1-0)
Norwich City away (which Liverpool won anyway)
Tottenham Hotspur away (which, in theory would have been a 1-1 draw without the mistake, so one point lost)
Manchester City away (Two points lost on the assumption that the Reds would’ve have won 2-1 otherwise; they may not have).
As the error data is available back to 2008/09, I checked all of those seasons too, and found that at most, Pepe Reina has cost Liverpool six points in four-and-a-half seasons; barely more than a point a year, in other words.
This isn’t to say that I think Reina should be entirely exempt from criticism right now, as his form has been on the wane for some time, but he is definitely not as costly error-wise as the Twitterati may have you believe.

In terms of points in the league; I'll just take it the author's probably right (didn't go run through the sums); the number of mistakes he's made though has been too high; it reminds me of Dudek in his final couple of seasons here. Even then, I don't know if Dudek made as many bad errors - he'd make them in the high profile games, but I don't remember if he was this bad.

Goals conceded by errors is interesting.
We're 2nd in that league with 31%.
Arsenal are top

We've not been done by many 'worldys' this season, the vast majority we've only ourselves to blame. Defence and keeper have been a mess this season.

Nice job. Must have taken a while.

I think we need to have a couple of things in mind when we try to see the performances in perspective.

Defensively we have been weak as a unit this season. The ball possession has been a main focus, and we have not had midfielders picking up dep runs from opposition, and they have also been piss poor in the pressing and tackling when we chase the ball. I am not sure if this is on Rodgers agenda at all, but so far the midfield has been chopped and changed week by week, and that has probably happened due to poor and not strong performances. Rodgers have obviously also looked to get Allen to shine, something he has failed in. Seem like he have given that tought a rest for a while, which will only do the team and Allen good, as the midfield look more stable at the moment.

Attackingwise we have been weak as a unit for most of the season. Suarez has set us on fire on some occasions, and has been outstanding. Some games we have run riot and scored plenty as a team as well, and that is important. We need to have more people involved in the attacking responsibilities, and we have not been good at all when it comes to manning up the opposition box. The possesion game has been more sideways than setting up triangles to break through press levels. There are many reasons for this, and unexperienced and immature squad can be used as an excuse. However, the youngsters have not been worse than the more experienced ones.

All in all we have struggled, and if (it is a big if) this constant struggle to take the next step as a team start to affect peoples head it is big danger. Experienced pro's need to feel they are part of a team moving in certain direction. We have been unstable since that 86 points handing us the 2nd, and we have not been able to capitalize on that progress shown in the period 2005-2009. If solid defenders like Agger and Skrtel (they are the main culprits singled out here) drop their focus by 5-10% they are not longer top performers. We will all say that they should be motivated by their fat paycheques and get their arses together. But they are humans and footballers and they have plenty of money already, and the ability to take out the last 5% when we are far away from any footballing reward (CL or trophies or whatever) is extreme hard. if the motivation of these people have dropped5% it is understandable, and in my eyes changing them will make the team even worse. We must rather fill the squad with people able to give the team the ability to compete for titles or at least CL and this way lift the already experienced peoples head the last 5%.
