Takes place today (12th Dec) in Paris. UK coverage on BBC2 from 17:15

The 23 qualifiers are divided into four pots based on UEFA national coefficients with Spain, as the reigning European champions, assured of a place in Pot 1 having qualified. France are not included in the pots as they are automatically assigned as team A1 so Pot 1 has five teams.

The teams will be drawn into six groups of four teams each (Groups A to F).

Italy are in pot 2? How did that happen?

Germany, Italy, Czech republic and Wales. That would be a nice group for their first appearance.

I'm thinking we'll get an Eastern European borefest - England, Russia, Hungary, Albania. No exciting football and plenty of potential banana skins.

Group A France, Romania Albania, Switzerland

Group B: England, Wales, Slovakia, Russia

Group C: Germany, Northern Ireland, Poland, Ukraine

Group D: Spain, Turkey, Czech Republic, Croatia

Group E: Belgium, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Italy

Group F: Portugal, Iceland, Hungary, Austria

Actually so is Frances.

D and E are horrible groups.

England should be well happy with that. But Roy.

There is talk of Woy being in charge of the England team till the World Cup.

That is until they get they get beat in the last 16.

I'm looking forward to the tournament. Only because i will be spending the first 2 weeks of it sunning myself in Mexico away from the media hype of it all.

A little fuzzy about the format. 6 groups, top 2 teams make 12 for the quarters. Where is the other 4 teams coming from? Best 4 of the 3rd placings?

To accommodate the expansion from a 16 team finals tournament to 24 teams, the format will be changed from that used in 2012 with the addition of two extra groups in the group stage, and an extra round in the knockout stages. The six groups (A to F) would still contain four teams each, with the top two from each group still going through to the knockout stage. In the new format however, the four best third-ranked sides would also progress, leaving 16 teams going into the new round of 16 knockout stage, ahead of the usual quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, and only 8 teams going out at the group stage.[13] The format is exactly the one which was applied to the 1986, 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups, with the exception of the absence of a third-place play-off.

Ok so there could be a possibility for a team to draw 1 and lose 2 in the group stages and STILL advance into the quarter finals?

How exciting.
