Real Madrid midfielder reveals Liverpool FC plans
by Richard Buxton. Published Mon 04 Apr 2011 11:28, Last updated: 2011-04-04

Xabi Alonso has revealed his plans to bring his son up a Liverpool supporter.

The midfielder is expected to feature for Real Madrid during their Champions League quarter-final tie with Tottenham, who currently edge the Reds in the race for the Premier League's final European qualification place, this week.

And despite leaving Anfield for the Spanish capital in 2009, Alonso remains fond of his former club following a momentous five years during which he lifted won Europe's premier club competition in addition to the FA Cup.

"I am still a Liverpool fan and will be forever, absolutely," he told The Times.

"The things that I have lived and the experiences I had during those five years are deep in my heart and the passion and respect I had for the club and its supporters are still the same.

"Hopefully I can transmit to my son what Liverpool Football Club means and how special it is, as he was born in the city and he will visit it in the future."

I don't really understand the politics, but I find it a bit strange how on one hand he can have this genuine fondness and 'get it', whereas on the other he's a basque (formerly captaining a basque team) now playing in madrid.

Have I missed something?

Very good professional and a great talent.

It's a crying shame that we lost him.

Only because he got dicked about.

This old chestnut 😉

My opinion... His form had dipped. Rafa looked for a replacement/rival. Xabi got a kick up the arse and played great again. Nothing wrong with that.

His form didn't dip sufficiently enough to get the treatment he got, when there were far worse players in the squad that Rafa was more than happy with.

He was certainly playing better out of form than Gareth Barry in the form of his career.

I should really post up a video of my drunken friend walking around the city with me at 3am discussing the Barry & Alonso saga.

Doesn't matter, he still wanted out. If you don't want to play for LFC then leave.

I used to blame Xabi but the more I look back at things, he was treated badly by Rafa.

I still cannot believe Rafa tried his best to sign that fucking useless overrated shit excuse for a midfielder when we had XABI ALONSO!

I'd swapsies Carroll and Pepe for Xabi.
there is no one I wouldn't swap alonso for in our current squad, including gerrard.

I wouldn't go as far as either of you two, like.

Nothing fucks me off more than the fact that Xabi doesn't play for us.

The Xabi-shaped hole in our side is enormous. I'm concinved we'd be competing in the top 4 straight away if we dropped him back into the side.

I agree.

I was actually thinking back to the summer he left yesterday and how a few quite a few pundits were predicting we'd win the title after finishing 2nd. It would seem Xabi was extremely underrated. Less so now perhaps, at least amongst Liverpool fans.

It seems to me like a high profile scouser going from merseysides second club to manchester. Only far worse.
Which of our reserves did that????

As for Xabi, if no one is going to say it then I will.

He can go fuck himself.

He talks about how much the club means to him; but left us after proving to everyone he was our best player.

The frustrations and anger he felt were all rightful, he was whored around by Rafa for a year and he only stayed because too many people shared Rafa's myopia (even I thought letting him go wasnt such a bad thing because he looked jaded)

And he rammed that error down everyone's throats.

Good for him.

BUt he left us just when we were getting really good , and I dare say the conveyor belt of rats jumping off the sinking SS Liverpool would have never happened otherwise. The Alonso debacle was probably the one thing that doomed Rafa, arguably.

Congrats Xabi, you proved your point and we went to shit.

Now you want to raise your kid as a Liverpool supporter?

Which Lverpool team would that be? The possibly great team you could have helped fashion or the rubbish we are now?

He also refused to play on a few occasions. Players who claim to "get us" don't do that. Would have him back in a heartbeat though

There were a few of us warning of the potential impact of losing him. People would point to individual games, such as beating the Mancs without him, but over the course of the season, losing that kind of quality will always hurt you. And how it has.

I know the 'all he does is pass' comment has become somewhat infamous around these parts, but when so many of our squad seem incapable of the very basics, even that would be a godsend.

we'd still be a top four team with alonso, I think his sale is a massive reason for our decline much more so than the sale of mash. xabi's assured passing has left a massive gap in midfield and I'm sure that is the reason we're going for the 'alonso lite' adam.

yet rafa didn't leave us in the shit

*runs*
I can't be 'totally' angry at rafa for attempting to bin off a player who had a dip in form. remember, juve wouldn't even stump up the 15m alonso was first available.

I was one of the people who advocated selling Xabi when he wasn't performing. When he did get that kick up the ass that he needed, he was sensational. I'm sorry that he left and would have him back in a heartbeat. He is exactly the kind of player that we need.
