I haven't seen any contract developments other than the Echo reporting we are relaxed about the situation. Juventus are sniffing around and I can see why given their aging and injury prone midfield. He would likely get games for then and they're a CL finalist so clearly ahead of us at at the moment. The more it lingers on, the more I think he's off. If it came to it, what sort of fee are we looking at? £25m?

I like Emre. He's got the right attitude, working his bollocks off on the field, and he's one of very few powerful players we have.
But if him being sold means we can get Keita I'm up for it. We can address the AFCON thing next summer.

Most of the time he is the only one who gives a fuck bursting his guts out to try to win us the game. Even Coutinho shirk from responsibility from time to time but Can never hides.

We will be weakened regardless of who we bring in. Just for that sheer passion and commitment alone we should pay him what he's worth.

As I said in the other thread, selling him would be very stupid.

Can's 4 years younger than Henderson, and already at his level. He still has a lot of development in him, and in 1-2 years, he could very well be world class.

He has every attribute - power, technique, passing and competitive spirit.

Most CMs take till about 24-25 to peak. Henderson took that much time. As did Matic. As did Kante.

He's proven in his time that given a sustained run, he can be very very good (later third of this season, and the Europa League run last season). What he needs to work on is fitness and consistency. I'm pretty sure that's not very far away.

And the idea of replacing him with Keita is just weird.

Firstly, Keita is more offensive minded than Can, so if anything he should be replacing Wijnaldum and partnering Can instead of replacing him.

Secondly, Keita may well be good, but he's still only 21. Are we seriously going to get rid of someone who's been here for 3 years, has Premiership experience, and is on the cusp of being very very good, and pin our hopes on a 21 year old who's never played in England?

I think he's exactly the type o player we could b giving a pay rise to 100k pw or beyond on a 4 year deal and if clubs did want him next summer and he continues to progress , we could easily be seeing 40/50/60m offers for him from the big continental sides , his physicality alone would see him dominate many leagues in Europe

Yous are nuts, he hasn't progressed at all. He's got the football brain of jonjo shelvey.

As I said, he's got the right attitude. Great physique too. But if selling him meant that we could bring in Keita and have funds available elsewhere then I'd do it.
Can looks very good on occasions but he's also not THAT intelligent with his passing (doesn't have a huge range of passes either), keeps the ball too long, and positioning can be suspect.
He may improve on all that of course, and if we were filthy rich we should definitely keep him.
But we're not, and it's nothing like losing Alonso or Mascherano or witnessing a declining Gerrard.
He is nowhere near their talent and never will be.

Xhaka cost Arsenal that amount (or 35m) last summer, but that was with 3 years to run on his contract (he extended in 2015 with Monchengladbach until 2019). So I think we may get less than 25m with his current contract status, unless we've a few clubs competing to get him in before he goes into free agency. Juventus could tempt him to stay put for now and offer him a pre-contract in the winter promising him a bigger wage with some of the transfer fee saved + Khedira's starting spot in the following season.

Anyway, assuming he's on 60K a week right now, it would've cost us 22.5m in 4 years (10m fees + 12.5m wages) at the end of his 4-year contract. That's about 5.5m a year - it's not a terrible expense.

I'd rather we kept him and continued working on the contract in his final year. We've already got enough gaps to fill in the squad - we could do with having one less spot to think about this off-season. If he opts to sign a pre-contract with someone else in the winter transfer window, then that's too bad, but at least we bought us another year to look for (or develop) his cover or to convince him to stay.

Juve have been very very shrewd operators in the transfer market in recent years and if they're genuinely interested in Can it says something about how he's viewed in the footballing world.

Can has a lot of qualities and can continue to develop and get better. I'd be disappointed if, after giving him so much game time, we lost him for relatively little. The fact that we have a bit of a weak midfield would make the the whole situation even more absurd.

If nothing else, keep him and let him go for free next summer.

Sign him. The investment is worth it. Stupid to let him go undervalued. Stupid to let him go next year for free. He may or may not develop into a world class star but he will retain value enough fr us to take the risk in finding out.

I'm in the sign him up camp. When were throwing 100k a week at average players like Lovren I'm surprised this has taken so long.

Not fussed. If he goes we can do better, he is a very good member of the squad but for me would not be in our best starting team.

Looks to be a wages issue, as klopp seems pretty relaxed. I can see us loosing out on a few deals because of the wage structure. Salah on 90k is what fsg will pay. We need a few more players on the courtinho level and the package that goes with it.

Very good squad player but echo what other people say about us being able to do better.

Keita whilst unproven ability wise is above Can. Before people jump at that statement, it appears he's a much better passer, tactically much more aware, faster and knows how to score a goal (box to box type) and ping in a 30 yarder.
