Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is leading the race for Bolton hot shot Johan Elmander – but will have to come up with £5million to buy him.

Hodgson and his No.2 Sammy Lee watched long-term target Elmander at the weekend before dashing off to travel to Tottenham for yesterday’s match.

Elmander turned down a one-year contract extension with Wanderers last week and is keeping his options open with his current deal expiring in the summer.

Hodgson has tried for Elmander twice before during his time at Fulham.
He missed out when he came in from Toulouse and made an attempt to land him in his low period at the Reebok last season.

The Kop chief is looking for more options up front and tried and tested Elmander fits the bill well, especially if he sells one of his other forwards in the January window.

Elmander failed to score against Blackpool but his sky-high confidence was evident with a glorious touch in the build-up to the late equaliser.

Bolton do not want to sell Elmander, who is on a stunning £50,000-a-week deal, but a cash offer in the New Year market may be accepted to let Owen Coyle bring in two or three players.

The fee would be within Liverpool’s budget, which could be increased if Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel or David N’Gog find new homes in January as the Anfield manager tries to wheel and deal with his squad.

Elmander is settled in the north west, so a move to Liverpool could appeal to him. But sources close to the Swede say that he wants first-team football if he moves
- and that may be an issue.

Hodgson has admitted that he wants cover for Fernando Torres, but he would have to have a place in his side - and not the bench - for Elmander.

There are a handful of foreign clubs looking at Elmander too, with Bolton expecting interest in January but relaxed about how it pans out as they have their own options.

Jesus wept.

Elmander,Ngog,Jovanovic.

Thats the sort of forward line fucking Fulham should be fielding not Liverpool,Woy.

I'll be devastated if we spunk £5m on him.

Although, everthing Henry and Comolli have said in recent weeks knocks this one on the head for me.

Good value for money? nope.

kind of player commoli would want? Nope

a signing the Chief exec, manager and director of football will all agree on? nope.

Phew.

Used to play in France though. Uh oh.

I quite like him, but we need better.

not totally against this:

1. he's not good enough, but he's miles better than ngog. so he'd improve us, which is the first objective of any signing.
2. at £5m or a free transfer in the summer, he represents clear 'value', so he might well appeal to john henry as well as hodgson.

whatever, i stand by it. elmander's miles better than ngog. doesn't mean i want us to sign him, either.

I was hoping he'd be better than Insua though.

Disappointing transfers.

I felt both Ming and Cole would be excellent, Konchesky would be adequate (replacing Insua) and Poulsen would be crap (replacing Mash).

Always liked Elmander.

We shouldn't pay over the top for him but at his best he's unplayable.

he's fucking useless and we shouldn't touch him with a bargepole.

I don't this fella's pervious but less than 24 hours ago you suggested spending £15m on Nicklas Bendtner.
Elmander is muck. His goal at Wolves the other week aside.

do i have to spell it out?

1. the slagging of elmander was a joke at zlatan's expense - ie the opposite of his opinion must be true. i'd have thought that'd be obvious given that about 3 posts above i'd actually cautiously welcomed the signing. have you got the memory of a goldfish or something?
2. i don't know what you keep blithering on about kuyt for. i've got nothing against him. but i just think that, if we were to get a couple of new wingers and a striker there'd be little call for him to play many games, and therefore given that he's over 30 and stil fairly valuable, one might think that it's not entirely unreasonable to think it might be a judicious time to cash in on him. i bet almost everyone on here would agree with that, but it seems to have cut you to the chase. has he got danish ancestry we're unaware of or something?
3. you're still sore that i 'shouted' at you about bendtner, aren't you? i wasn't being completely serious, you know. i was more incredulously exasperated than anything else.

If ever evidence were needed...

http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wanderers/wanderersnews/8714290.Whites_slap___5m_price_tag_on_Johan/

Wanderers will hold out for £5million in January for top scorer Johan Elmander, if he signals he does not want to stay at the Reebok.

Liverpool lead the chase for the Sweden international striker, who turned down a one-year extension to his current deal last week to explore his options.

Reds boss Roy Hodgson has twice tried to sign Elmander before without success but is confident he can raise sufficient funds next month to beat off competition from the Continent to land the eight-goal striker.

Owen Coyle does not want to lose the club record signing, who he has helped to transform into one of the Premier League’s in-form front men. But if the club can recoup the majority of the £8.2million they paid to Toulouse in July 2008, he is willing to use the funds to invest elsewhere in his squad.

The Whites boss said at the weekend that Elmander’s Swiss-based agent Anders Wallsten has “not closed the door†on an agreement after a meeting with chairman Phil Gartside last Wednesday morning, and that dialogue would continue between the two parties.

But it is looking increasingly likely Wanderers will have to listen to offers, so they avoid the risk of losing him for nothing in the summer.

Liverpool are desperate to boost their attacking options and are likely to spend when the window reopens in 30 days.

Elmander wants a guarantee of first-team football if he is to move to Anfield – which could be the biggest obstacle for the deal – but The Bolton News understands he has ruled out a move to Stoke City, who have also made tentative enquiries.

Spartak Moscow and Fenerbahce have also been monitoring the player’s situation, although with his wife and two children settled in their Cheshire home, a move to Merseyside could prove much more appealing.

Hodgson and his assistant Sammy Lee watched Elmander last weekend against Blackpool, and are also rumoured to be considering a bid for Gary Cahill, reports claimed yesterday.

Arsenal and Spurs are also keen on the England defender, and are able to offer Champions League football, which would make them a more likely destination.

For 5m he's a decent enough stopgap as back-up/partner for Torres.

I'd rather Elmander than Carlton Cole.
