Dunne???

We could do worse. He's a far better player than when he used to eat all the pies on the other side of Stanley Park.

He has been an excellent player for the Rep of Ireland for a long ime now and was City's player of the season for two or three years in a row before money went to their heads.
Strong in the air, committed and wholehearted, he would be a step up from Kyrgiakos and as of now would be a good compliment to Agger.
Hardly a long term solution though.

From the Liverpool Echo:

Baggies keen on Kyrgiakos

In a bid to strengthen his defence before the January transfer window slams shut, West Brom manager Roberto di Matteo is said to be keen to recruit Liverpool's Greek centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Whether or not he would be available is another matter, with the Reds looking fairly light in the defensive department themselves of late

Dunne would be an improvement on Skrtel. Then again, I would be.
[/quote]

Would he fuck. He'd be an improvement on Soto though.

Nobody who can wipe the floor with Dogbreath, the way Skrtel has done before now, is gash. He's admittedly not had a good season, but he's hardly alone in that and there have been signs of improvement under Kenny.

Richard Dunne's recent off-field bust-up with Aston Villa coaching staff has caught the attention of Liverpool and Manchester United, with both clubs said to be considering launching bids to sign the Irish defender in the summer according to The Metro.

Dunne has had two very public bust-up's at Villa, the most recent coming after drunken antics during a team bonding exercise. Both Dunne and teammate James Collins were fined two-weeks wages for the incident which happened at a training camp in Leicestershire.

Late last year, Dunne almost came to blows with coach Gary McAllister over a disagreement over tactics.

The Republic of Ireland international may be wayward of late, but a guiding hand could come from either Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool or Sir Alex Ferguson at United.

With an injury crisis striking at the heart of Manchester United's defence, Dunne could be a perfect stop-gap for the club as he nears his peak.

At 31-years of age, Dunne brings with him a wealth of experience, but also a tough tackling mentality which both managers will appreciate.

Although United reported a loss of £105million this week, they would be inclined to bolster defensive stocks which continue to lose players to either suspension or injury.

Liverpool may look to Dunne as a replacement for Greece international Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who may have fallen foul of Dalglish after he gave away a clumsy penalty in the Europa League against Braga.

The solitary goal was successfully defended by the Portuguese side at Anfield, earning their passage through to the quarter-finals.

Some of the criticism Skrtel gets is laughable. He might not have had a good season but to think he is anything other than a very good centre back is stoopid.

Since he's been with us he's had great games against most of the better strikers in the prem JJ. He's just got to cut out some of the sloppy mistakes he makes.

I don't think we need another CB (unless we've got loads of money), but i'd be more than happy for Dunne to come in to replace the Greek.

Is the greeks contract up this summer? Good replacement if so! He wouldnt enjoy the same cult status as soto though......man i'll miss soto when he goes :'(

Sotos contract does indeed run out this summer, but there is an option for one more year. IF its based on games played it has probably already been extended for one more year.

I like Dunne, but shouldn't we be setting our sights higher. This was a H and G signing when we had no dough. We need to set our sights higher as fans now as well. We will rebuild, we have money, we have a future. No more average signings.

Why would we pay a transfer fee for a drunken 31-year-old CB who gets into fights 'over tactics' with Gary McAllister? That link smells of bullshit to me. Pretty sure United wouldn't want him either.

He was linked in January aswell. He'll probably end up back at Everton.

While I have a soft spot for the big pony tailed warrior, I do think that Dunne would be a better back up option. At one stage for Villa he was putting in some very good performances.

How much would he cost? 3 million?

What makes you think that he wants to join us to become a back up player?
He concedes too many penalties for my liking.

The "eFuck fantasy" bit? Yeah.
The bit about Cahill giving away penalties? No. I suspect I did exactly the same as you and thought of a couple of incidents when Dunne/Cahill gave away penalties, and decided to make a point about it.

Yeah that's fair. Comparing the record holder for conceded penalties, red cards and own goals with Cahill.

what are they like at teh same age?

Dunne would take a lot of the pressure off Carragher. We'd have another defender adept at putting the ball in his own net.

Dunne won't happen for several reasons. His age for startes. But I like him and think he's a good centre back. Excellent in the air and seems to have only gotten quicker with age.
