Hillsborough match commander David Duckenfield is to face trial for the manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 Liverpool supporters after a judge lifted a stay on his prosecution.
Four other defendants charged with matters related to the disaster and its aftermath will also face trial following abuse of process arguments, which were heard at Preston Crown Court earlier this month.

Announcing his decision on Friday, judge Sir Peter Openshaw said: "In respect of the defendant, David Duckenfield, I lift the stay."

About 10 relatives of the 96 Liverpool fans who died at the FA Cup semi-final in 1989 were at Preston Crown Court to hear the ruling, while others watched proceedings on a video link In Liverpool.

There were shouts of "thank you" as the decision was announced.

The CPS has already charged five other men with criminal offences relating to the disaster and South Yorkshire police’s handling of it. Graham Mackrell, a former Sheffield Wednesday secretary and safety officer, is charged with three breaches of safety legislation; ex-South Yorkshire police chief superintendent Donald Denton and chief inspector Alan Foster are charged with acts tending and intending to pervert the course of justice, as is the force’s former solicitor, Peter Metcalf.

It is actually, but the defence argument would be that it's true.

Mind you, despite the fact that he's understandably become a lightning rod for the hurt and anger of those affected, Duckenfield was ultimately the monkey in this, not the organ-grinder. Those in the FA and in S.Yorks.Police who were responsible for the chain of incompetence and malice which placed this unsuitable individual in a job which was probably impossible anyway are the ones who should really be in the dock.
