When Lucas is fit, I hope, just once, Brendan treats us to a Hendo, Lucas, Allen midfield. I really, really want to see what 93% possession without crossing the halfway looks like.

He is a good player who needs a rest, like a few other lads in first 11.
Rafa used to get criticised for rotating but he like most other managers, know you cant expect the same performance levels from the same first 11 every week.
It is a squad game and our back up players are not very good.

Probably not play three in the middle who have ONE goal between them all season would be a good start. Sahin and Shelvey both have scored goals.
I guess it is extremelly difficult having a gameplan where more than one guy attacks the opposition box....

I'm struggling to see what Allen and Henderson are bringing to our midfield that Shelvey, and to a lesser extent, Sahin, could.
They're both playing anonymously, making stupid mistakes and are unable to control a match.

Joe Allen isn't a bad player. At the start of the season, he was lovely to watch. Moving the ball nicely, confidently and efficiently. He has gone of the boil recently but let's not get carried away thinking we bought a dud. He is playing every game in a deeper role that he is accustomed to. He will come good, i'm sure of it. I like his footballing brain and we'll see the real Joe Allen again before the season is out. Henderson in a DM role would be a decent option to give Allen a chance to re charge his batteries. It would also keep Henderson away from the opposition goal. 😉

Joe Allen is a superb player and should start every game, it's not his fault that there isn't sufficient movement (apart from Suarez) for him to pick out. If the opposition have Suarez marked who is Allen supposed to pass to, the static Gerrard? the useless Downing? the stationary Henderson?
We need Suso and Shelvey in the team: Suso is very good at finding space and Shelvey is perpetual motion....this would give Allen options.
It's sad to say that Gerrard does need to be dropped and (even though I can't believe I'm going to type this) Lucas should replace him.

I think there's a good chance you will be proved right mate, love him as a player too, but even though he's certainly not the problem at this stage he's not the solution either.
As been said the better side lost last night, thought we were unlucky to be honest. A few strong penalty claims obviously not going our way, loads of golden opportunities and last second clearances by Spurs players left us frustrated once again.
We really do lack a player with the ability to play inbetween the midfield and attacking lines imo. Gerrard can be that player but not in a team where possession is god, he's not a player that thrives the most from tippy tappy football. He's all power, strength and dynamics which is somehow lost in this team at the moment. I know he isn't he's own strong self either, but I believe that is a big part of his "demise".
What to do then, well, I believe Rodgers should stick to his guns really, don't change the system to acommodate one player rather than the team, but he's then obviously short of personel.
I know I am sounding like a broken record here but we desperately need an Eriksen type of player to combine the lines, one who can not only dictate play as Allen does, only 20 yards further up field, but on that can hit that final pass and possess a threat from a distance too. Last night some of our best throughballs where hit by Suarez to whom? Our left back (a left back which by all means has been a real trooper for us over the last few games mind, cudos Enrique).
Sahin has so far not proved to be the answer, he is, albeit rather confusing for me, looking better further back field than when pushed forward. Shelvey is probably the best shout at the moment but again it's not his natural position especially not when we are expecting to pass the ball around loads before making the surging run. Suso may be the answer in a few years but we can't wait that long.
Bonus info: Rodgers has seen Eriksen at first hand when at Chelsea on one of his trials there, even Fischer too, if I'm not mistaken, and those two players would make us all jump in glee within a few months and Rodgers knows that too.

This is the crux, he needs to be further up the pitch, turning inside out and playing the short threaded passes, when he's deep he's not really being afforded any space to make a difference in that respect, and he's so far back from the rest of the play that his short passing game becomes redundant. He's clearly not as comfortable playing raking 30 yard passes, and as a result is being forced into the easy option. Put him further up in the easier games coming up, put Lucas or Hendo back there and allow him to link the play better and he'll come good.
