Chelsea have confirmed Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has been diagnosed as suffering from malaria.
It had been thought Drogba had been struggling with a virus for the last few weeks after he missed the games at Aston Villa and Spartak Moscow last month, but blood tests revealed he has been suffering from malaria.
The former Marseille ace was a surprise starter on the bench for last weekend's defeat to Liverpool before coming on for the start of the second half.
Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed after the game that Drogba did not start at Anfield because he complained of having a fever on the eve of the game.
It has now been discovered that Drogba's illness is in fact malaria and Ancelotti is in the dark about how he contracted it.
"We found out last night when blood tests showed he had malaria," said Ancelotti. "I don't know where he got it from."

RecoveredAncelotti insists Drogba has fully recovered from the disease and will start against Fulham on Wednesday as the Blues look to get back to winning ways.
"He had a problem," added Ancelotti. "He has this virus and, obviously, he lost power and training.
"He lost his condition. He's had treatment and now he's OK. He'll come back immediately in the best condition.
"He suffered, obviously, because he wasn't 100% but now, after treatment, he'll be better. He had malaria. He had the tests in the last day, and they showed this kind of virus. Now he's good.
"I don't know where he got it from. I gave him a few days off and he went on holiday for a few days, and then he has malaria. But it's over now. He's OK."

Hmm Hasn't Coles Missus just had it too.

That would be the best way of catching it though, for sure 😛olice:

Its a joke Brendan FFS.

Seriously though, if that was him playing with Maleria on Sunday, thank fuck he wasn't 100%

He's not as hard as Bert Trautman though 😉

Bernhard Carl "Bert" Trautmann, OBE (born 22 October 1923), is a retired German footballer who played for Manchester City from 1949 to 1964.

Brought up during times of inter-war strife in Germany, Trautmann joined the Luftwaffe early in the Second World War, serving as a paratrooper. He fought on the Eastern Front for three years, earning five medals including an Iron Cross. Later in the war he was transferred to the Western Front, where he was captured by the British as the war drew to a close. One of only 90 of his original 1,000-man regiment to survive the war, he was transferred to a prisoner-of-war camp in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Trautmann refused an offer of repatriation, and following his release in 1948 he settled in Lancashire, combining farm work with playing as goalkeeper for local football team St Helens Town.

Performances for St Helens gained Trautmann a reputation as an able goalkeeper, resulting in interest from Football League clubs. In October 1949 he signed for Manchester City, a club playing in the highest level of football in the country, the First Division. The club's decision to sign a former Axis paratrooper sparked protests, with 20,000 people attending a demonstration. Over time he gained acceptance through his performances in the City goal, playing all but five of the club's next 250 matches.
Named FWA Footballer of the Year for 1956, Trautmann entered football folklore with his performance in the 1956 FA (Football Association) Cup Final. With 17 minutes of the match remaining Trautmann suffered a serious injury after diving at the feet of Birmingham City's Peter Murphy. Despite his injury he continued to play, making crucial saves to preserve his team's 3–1 lead. His neck was noticeably crooked as he collected his winner's medal; three days later an X-ray revealed it to be broken. Trautmann continued to play for Manchester City until 1964, making 545 appearances. After ending his playing career he moved into management, first with lower-division sides in England and Germany, and later as part of a German Football Association development scheme that took him to several countries including Burma, Tanzania and Pakistan. In 2004 he was appointed an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for promoting Anglo-German understanding through football.

Think Gerry Byrne played in an FA Cup final with a broken collar-bone though.

Yeah but , you can die or paralyze yourself with a broken neck, you get a limp and with a broken foot, and a stiff arm with a broken collar bone, no contest.

Yeah BUT Gerry Byrne played all except 2 minutes of the game with his fracture whereas Trautmann wasn't injured till the 73rd minute. Over. 😉

Once you have Malaria it stays with you and can reoccur at any time (there are also different variations - one deadly) - so if he's had it once before (more than likely) then it is probably just resurfacing.

From Drogba to Bert Trautman via Cheryl Cole in just a few posts. The wonders of SCM.

The hardest man to ever walk the planet... ladies & gentlemen I give you Buck Shelford

Thank christ he was a rugby player

Shelford made his Test debut for the All Blacks later that year against France in a 19–7 victory in Toulouse, and then was a notable victim of the infamous "Battle of Nantes" in the second Test. Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford's groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed. He was substituted and watched the remainder of the game from the grandstand where he witnessed the All Blacks lose 16–3. To this day Shelford has no memory of the game.

I reckon if he already had it before he would have known about it. Ancelloti seemed surprised that he had it, and didn't know where he got it. But yeah, there are 4 different kinds, the majority are benign, with one becoming deadly if not treated. But there are plenty of antibiotics and antibacterials to treat.

Not something he would advertise to a prospective employer but living in sub-Saharan Africa in many countries it's something you would find hard to avoid. I lived there for 5 years and had malaria once, and one reoccurrence. Nothing for the last 20 years though. It could easily reappear and it's likely this is what happened to Drogba. I'm not sure if there is a blood test that can show if you have had malaria in the past or if there are anti-bodies floating around.

They are. Shelford's just mental.

He's a cult hero in New Zealand... went on to captain the All Blacks.

Not suprisingly he's the one that taught them how to do the haka properly.

Maybe that wide eyed stare with tongue hanging out came from the moment he looked in his underwear?????
