Kenny Dalglish heaped more pressure on fellow Scot Alex McLeish after first-half goals from Craig Bellamy and Martin Skrtel helped Liverpool to their fifth away league win of the season beating Aston Villa 2-0.

The home fans greeted former player Stuart Downing, who moved north to join Liverpool for £20 million in the summer, with a chorus of boos every time the England man touched the ball.

Downing left B6 under somewhat of a cloud having made noises about committing to Villa before doing the complete opposite.

And it was the Villans' player of the season from last season who took the corner for Bellamy to tap in from a yard out on 11 minutes to open the scoring.

Prior to kick-off the home side had conceded six goals from corners so it was no surprise when Liverpool doubled their lead four minutes later as Bellamy turned provider with an in-swinging corner for Skrtel to head home on his 100th league start for the club.

Shorn of both the suspended Gabriel Agbonlahor and Darren Bent (thigh), former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey was left to lead the line.

Heskey scored 60 goals in 228 appearances for the Merseyside club before joining Villa in January 2009 for a fee of £3.5 million.

Since that move he has only managed nine goals in 77 appearances so it was no surprise that he missed from two yards out in the opening exchanges.

The away side could have easily doubled their lead within minutes of the restart.

Daniel Agger managed to steer his header wide after after a good run and cross from Bellamy down the left side, before Luis Suarez tricked his way past Richard Dunne only for his right-footed effort to bounce off the underside of the crossbar.

Boos rang out at the final whistle for McLeish who is now surely on borrowed time and the same lack of invention, creativity and cutting edge that saw his former club Birmingham City relegated just six months ago, is something that is surely weighing heavy on the minds of every Villa supporter

If ever proof were needed that these twats are more worried about headlines than the facts of the game...

I only managed to watch MOTD, but going by that he looked good.

He played one pass through the middle that was simply fantastic.

I think his confidence is in bits

Think mac said it, if he exploited the space he had in front of him more we could have had a good few more opportunities

He did play good, but the same people who like to pick on one player and slag him for a whole season are doing it to him because Lucas or whoever suddenly came good

He made some great passes during the game, didn't he play the one for Suarez when he dinked it over the keeper? Played it about 30-40 yards to perfection. I thought he had a good game.

Rinse and repeat every season

He was alright, I wouldn't say good, a distinct 7. To say in inspired the victory though is just silly. Bellamy inspired the victory.

I have been supportive of Downing, but I thought that was a performance in which he repeatedly failed to take advantage of good situations.

I was disappointed with Downing yesterday to be honest. I thought he played it far too safe.

Earlier in the season I was very happy with him even though he was getting a lot of stick here. He made numerous chances for his teammates that should have been converted but wernt. The net result is that he has reached almost year's end without a single assist, and his confidence seems very low.

Hitting the woodwork 3-4 times should give him encouragement though, and Kenny is always supportive, its all going to click for him soon enough.
