I know it's AS, but they're claiming Villa will be leaving Barca at season's end due to lack of opportunities under Tito Vilanova. Article claims a 12-15 million euro offer from Rodgers will be used ...

I think he'd be a brilliant signing. I know he's 32, but he's a predator, great movement and is comfortable in that LW position in the 4-3-3.

Would love if this could be done in Jan.

I refuse to get excited.
He's 31 by the way, but he's played 18 games so far this season. Many could be off the bench though.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

Thankfully, in this case, I can't see the board sanctioning £15M euros for a 31 year old.

If he leaves, it wont be for that fee. 31, 18 months left on his contract and if he moves in the summer it will be for 8-10 mill imho.

At the right price and if we're sure he wants to come to this country (some of his previous comments were pretty clear that he didn't), sign sign sign. I think he'd flourish in the Prem if his heart was really in a move.

IMO no (again, with the proviso that he does want to be here). Morientes is a decent player in the right set-up but I never thought he'd be suited here, where I always reckoned the game would pass him by. Villa on the other hand is a nippy, nuggety little terrier of a player with a low centre of gravity who I can see standing up well to the pace and power of the game in England.

I can't wait for the inevitable head scratching and bollox excuses if we do sign him and he's not very good.

Unless it's for about 5mill, 2yr contract for about 50k a week, I'm out. Fuck that.
Like Gerrard, he was a great player about 5yrs ago, but now he'll be looking for a big payday as he's on the other side of the hill.

The main concern is why he's not been playing for Barcelona. Pedro has been decent but not great and not scoring. Sanchez also is good but not amazing. Villa on form is twice the player of either. But he's not playing.

He's been involved in 18 games and scored 8 goals, so not playing is stretching it a bit.

Waits for headlines like "Villa sinks Villa as Ireland gets called up for Ireland" in Birmingham papers

It's not stretching it though. 6 starts in 16 league games and 1 start in the CL.

He's benched for almost every meaningful game and for a player of Villas calibre, that's "not playing".

True, although he did return in mid August after being out for 8 months.
Decent goal return with so few starts, and it could be that Villanova doesnt rate him in his set up.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat nontheless.

He was a great player three years ago as well as five years ago but the point remains....in terms of quality though he is undoubtedly the best player we have been linked to in about 5 years. I'm not so sure his injuries may well have crocked him forever however so it would be a massively expensive gamble.

Arf, makes sense.
Loan him with an option to buy in the summer only if he looks any good, but on a rolling 12 month contract

regards

I've got a different impression of Villa to some on here, it would seem.

Unbelievable predator in his day and it's something we need now, IMO. That said, he's never struck me as the stronger, nuggety type but rather a bit more of a lightweight.

He'd be much better than Morientes who was never, ever going to work in the EPL but I'm not sure he'd handle the game here. I have no doubt he's felt the same and the underlying reason why he's always said he didn't want to go to England.

If he signs he'll be our best goal poacher and while I'm in favour of signing goal scoring, intelligent attacking players he wouldn't be as successful as some expect. That said, any improvement in the penalty area may be worth the price.
