A lot of hindsight but just some thoughts/whining
1. If we accepted Leipzig's stance earlier and work on the deal which we eventually did, could we have focused more efforts on addressing other issues + allocate the relevant budget for other signings? With Laimer signed earlier on and Kampl brought after the deal was confirmed (not to mention the clause that will kick in next summer), it's pretty evident that this Leipzig were resigned to losing him and have their options line up.
2. (Just 2 examples) Silva for £43m and Salah £34.3m in May and Jun respectively vs. Lemar for £92m (for whom Arsenal bidded £40m lesser in Jul) near transfer dateline day. Locking down your target and stumping up the cash for what seems to be a higher than valuation fee earlier in the transfer window may not seem that ridiculous after all. (Mane, like Salah was also a Jun signing)
3. We probably got 'lucky' with Sakho - Palace's poor start to the season + Mangala rejecting a move. Keeping Moreno so as to free up Milner as a 'like a new signing' midfielder seems ok until after we signed Ox. Will we regret not accepting Napoli's reported bid (or trying to work out a deal)? Similarly, Watford apparently bidded £8+2m for Markovic back in Jun. We are now left with 2 players whose contract expires in 2019. New deal or prepare to lose them on a free (no-brainer for the latter it seems)
4. Hopefully, we learnt something about handling transfer after the VVD issues. If VVD has his heart set on joining us, why did we have to blow our own trumpet? Even if there is a bidding war, the player can choose to reject the other sides (e.g. Ox?)
It's been 'fun/interesting' though - been a long time since we were so involved right till the end of a transfer window.
