So that's the rumor going around.

John Cross in the Mirror reckons this signing is massive for China - they're getting a top international in his prime from a major club in Europe. It's their first big signing - normally it was good players (Witsel, Oscar), retirees (Tevez) or second tier players (Texieira, Hulk etc). Now it's Costa.

Do people think this will open the flood gates?
Or will the problems with a smaller league, unlikely int'l recognition and some odd internal laws (some player may be deported for getting photographed with a Japanese porn star) keep players away?
 
Nah itll always just be the South Americans chasing the coin.

Ronaldo for instance wont be going there post madrid, far more likely to hit the states to expand his brand . Like rooneh in the Jan window, imagine that troll living in china , christ.

This move just guarantees everton the big pay day for lukaku should costa go.

If true, this is shit. It's annoying and rather fishy that Chelsea keep selling players waaay over what they are currently worth to China. Surely 50mil would have sealed the deal for a disgruntled, aging wanker.

So is Costa second-tier or past his best?

We're better avoiding all those money grabbing South Americans and Africans.

Thanks god we have European footballers not interested in money in the game.
 
These fees and the weekly pay is unsustainable. Happened with Anzhi, now they're a nothing team

You can't just pick one poorly managed team from the countryside and say it's representative of the league as a whole. It's not. And if you knew anything about China you'd know those fees and wages clearly are easily sustainable, just as they are for United or Real Madrid.

Teams from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin and Shenzhen, to pick the obvious ones, are in extremely affluent cities with massive, virtually unlimited (sponsors queuing up), investment. The controls set up by the Chinese league have also ensured this will not become an unlimited free-for-all with a limited number of foreigners permitted per team.

Nothing's changed. Some players will still be happy to come over here for 2 years to secure their financial futures. Now and again it will be someone who's current and relevant. That won't make it a flood, it'll remain a trickle preying on those on the edges of mainstream top European football (marginalised by age or skills).

Wow. So much wrong in one post.

No, Costa isn't second-tier. He's just more interested in getting slightly more money than the fortunes he would collect in a proper, established elite level of football

Along with Jackson Martinez, Ramires, Oscar, Hulk, Gervinho, Paulinho, Obi Mikel, Teixeira, Ighalo

No pattern there though at all

It's not like Russia - Russian teams never signed a 28 year old int'l striker who was considered one of the top strikers in a premier league (i.e. Germany/Italy/England/Spain).
They got the Witsels, the Hulks, the Teixerias etc ...

People haven't got a clue at all when they think China is gonna be like another Russia.

China is not a backwater 3rd world country. It's a world superpower. Ask Trump. He should know. He is finding out now.

Tianjin Quanjian owner Shu Yuhui has claimed that his Chinese Super League club have secured pre-contract agreements over the transfer of three big European names.
The side have been linked to a number of players from Europe this past season and are said to have made formal approaches for Chelsea’s Diego Costa, Ligue 1 forwards Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao, Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Fiorentina striker Nikola Kalinic.
Although Yuhui refused to reveal which players have agreed deals, he confirmed that “two or three” transfers were now on the cards.

“It's safe to say we did make contact with all of those players, some of whom are still in talk with us," the billionaire owner told Tianjin Daily. “The only thing I can reveal right now is that we have agreed terms with two or three stars.
"The players have no problem with the deals and their clubs are also willing to let them leave.

“The only issue that remains unresolved is reaching agreements with their respective clubs over the transfer fees.”
Carlos Tevez, Oscar, Paulinho and Demba Ba are a handful of European players to have moved to China, with the appeal of the CSL growing in recent years.
With big money comes big transfer fees, but Yuhui insists his club will not be taken advantage of in the summer transfer window.
“The player we buy should satisfy two requirements," he added. "First, he is suitable to the style of football we play; and second, he has the right attitude.
“However, if some [European] clubs are intent on taking advantage of us, we won’t allow ourselves to get ripped off. We won’t lose our mind.”

I've seen one or two articles suggesting that China's progress and current status aren't (yet) totally firmly established. They have a sounder base than Russia, but that's not difficult.
 
Costa - still in his prime
Cavani - still in his prime.
Falcao - meh

These are big moves imo ... This isn't Hulk from Portugal or something.

Yeah there's always these articles. Unless you're living in that region or understand how things work over there, what we know will always be second hand information and looking from the outside-in. But hey if we're gonna talk about economics this isn't a good place or time to discuss these things.

China bailed Greece out and had a huge say during the Euro crisis. Out of 10 things we own in our household, at least half of them are made in China.

Perspective.

I don't care how much they get for him, as they have deep pockets regardless. I would just love to see him gone as his form is one of the main reasons they are where they are and i think they'd struggle to get a replacement with a similar level of ability to grind out goals in tight games.

I'm sure they'd love to 'target' Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Eden Hazard, but they know they'd never even consider it

They are more interested in competing in the best leagues, with the best players and the chance to win trophies that matter.

It is notable how many African and South American players seem to end up in China, and Russia before that.

My explanation is accurate. More interested in money

That's fine, though. Everyone has different motivations in life.

Agree with that. It's strange how sometimes well-meaning Western people want to dismiss obvious reality on the basis that it "fits a stereotype." I watched the same phenomenon in Russia and Ukraine – there were a handful of second-string European players, but those were very much the exceptions, while the stars of the caliber of Eto'o and Roberto Carlos saw it fit to spend the last years of their careers at Anzhi (accepting luxury cars as birthday gifts from the billionaire owner and trying to ignore occasional bananas dangled at them from the stands by their own teams' "fans"), while the likes of Yaya Toure, Hulk, Fernandinho, Douglas Costa and Willian spent some of their prime years there.

It's not a stereotype, just very understandable cultural and economic traits. A German or, say, Danish player would easily accept less money to play closer to home or otherwise in a comfortable environment – it's their cultural value. A Brazilian or an African player of any serious talent would typically be indebted to a host of agents and third-party "investors" and turning down a bigger money offer in most cases is simply not an option. Plus if you're Brazilian, your big dream is to play for the Brazil national team, not for Bayern or Liverpool – their view of football is not necessarily Euro-centered, which is again totally understandable.

Yeah, if you grew up in the Congo, Venezuela or Rwanda or whatever, you wouldn't really want to live there if you had the choice, and even Russia or some Chinese farming Provence seems OK if you're paid enough
