Coates has played very well lately. He was excellent last night and at Goodison. I think he suits teams that defend deep. Probably why he would struggle for us.
You've to question what Poyet was thinking. He takes the guy from us on loan, and then keeps persisting with the useless pair of Brown and O'Shea. I can't say Coates would've done better earlier in the season, but surely sticking with those two and then Verghini if one of them wasn't available, was clearly asking for trouble.
The other consequence from Sunderland defending deep is that they are creating far more chances on the break than they did by pushing up. Could have easily scored a couple last night and did score against Everton. Earlier in the season they looked toothless up front and hopeless at the back.

Any manager who, as Advocaat did last night, gets Jermain Defoe so fired up that he drops back to cover at LB has done a very special job indeed.
It's hard not to imagine that Sunderland are just the next Wigan (and I think Palace of the old days) - you can cheat death only that many times before you have to take the drop. It is a seriously bad squad.
