Footballer Steven Gerrard and his wife Alex have welcomed their third child.

The Liverpool star's wife gave birth to a girl at 4pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), weighing 7lbs, 15oz.

The couple have named the baby Lourdes.

In a statement, a spokesman for the couple said that the baby is "doing well", and added: "Steven and Alex would like to thank the media for respecting the privacy of their family at this time."

The Gerrards, who married in 2007, have two older daughters, seven-year-old Lilly-Ella and five-year-old Lexie.

Given his injury problems it might prove a stroke of genius that name.

HAHAHA! Nearly choked on my sandwich when I read this.

I've just edited a short film to celebrate this event but youtube says it's processing. What does that mean? How long must I goddam well wait?

Already rumours that the baby isn't Stevie's, but Madonna's are rife....in my head.

It's a totally crap name, especially when it had already been *claimed* by Madge.

Hey, Stevie, have a boy and called him "Brooklyn", no, "Brookie".

'em, not quite. Alas, there's so many different facets to America, so many types of Americans, that they don't fit into the Euro- stereotypes.. some lovely americans here in NYC for example. So many do-gooders, in fact!

They rarely do.

Slim chance of a son of Stevie even approaching his greatness.

You can count the number of sons of great players, that became legends themselves, on the fingers of one leper.

Hmm.

Paul Dalglish. Nope
Jordi Cruyff. Nope.
Andreas Laudrup. Nope

Can't think of any actually.

Alonso's dad won the league.

Cesare and Paolo Maldini both won the European Cup.

But yeah, it's rare.
