Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey claims he was told to say he'd not seen incidents by refereeing body

The PGMOL will face serious questions after Halsey's accusations, with Gary Neville asking if it constitutes corruption

Former Premier League ref Mark Halsey has claimed he was told by the refereeing body to say he had not seen incidents in matches.

55-year-old Halsey, who retired at the end of the 2012-13 season, made the shocking comments in in a debate over Sergio Aguero's appeal against a three-match ban that will rule him out of the Manchester derby.

Manchester City were understood to be appealing the ban because TV images showed referee Andre Marriner was close to the incident and appeared to be looking clearly at Aguero's tussle with West Ham defender Winston Reid.

But Halsey, in conversation on Twitter, made the shocking claim on Friday night that he has previously been told by PGMOL - the organising body for elite referees in England, to say he hadn't seen incidents that he had clearly witnessed.

"I have been in that situation," he wrote, "when I have seen an incident and been told to say I haven't seen it."

When quizzed further on who had pressurised him, Halsey revealed: "To be fair to the FA... it's not them.

"It comes from within the PGMOL."

The PGMOL was formed in 2001 to improve refereeing standards and provides officials for across the Premier League, Football League and FA competitions, receiving funding from all three bodies.

Halsey's alarming claims, which may have helped sway the results of retrospective appeals, should cause concern throughout football.

Gary Neville, the former Manchester United defender and Valencia boss, tweeted: "Is that not corrupt?

"Mark, I'd like to know who told you to say that!

"@FA and @premierleague think you have a major issue on your hands!!"

Mirror Sport has contacted the PGMOL for comment on the accusations

Sounds more like common-sense than corruption (absolutely the wrong term to use) to me. A way of overruling the referees without it being done in the spotlight of the press/public. And justice is done.

Do away with the stupid regulation that the FA can not rule on anything the referee has seen and the issue is not longer an issue anyway.

Yup.
It's logical so it won't happen in this league then.

Mark Halsey was always a attention seeking twat. Similar to Jeff Winter, Graham Poll, Mike Dean and Mark Clattenberg.

Out of interest I just googled Uriah Rennie and his twitter feed came up. He has 256 followers and mysteriously stopped tweeting in 2012. One of his last was this prediction for the future of society:

I don't remember him like that at all. I always thought he was more like a throwback to an era when refs could chat and share a joke with players while letting the game flow.

He's certainly seen as a whistle-blower by the refs' association and the FA. When he retired he got hired by BT to give the ref's perspective on games and the Premier League and refs' head put huge pressure on BT to replace him with Howard Webb, which they did.

He always seemed quite decent. Just remember thinking that there cant be much money in refereeing when you cant even get your teeth sorted. Always looked like he had been in a bar fight..

Halsey was a Ferguson arse-licker wasn't he? I'm sure it was him who admitted he was in awe of "Sir Alex" and took calls from him on his private phone although it was supposed to be strictly prohibited.

I also have a recollection that he cheated us out of a game against Utd at Anfield where he gave them everything including a sending-off and a late penalty.

He was indeed a massive twat, and utterly in thrall to the likes of Baconface especially, and also Mourinho. A star-fucking gobshite who was so painfully thrilled to be acknowledged by football's biggest stars and egos that his mewling neediness was almost painful.

Like lots of referees, in fairness.

Ah, fuck.

The list of decent referees is then down to zero again.

The rule did change. Now the rule is that the FA can take retrospective action on an incident that the ref saw, providing the ref didn't see it CLEARLY. Makes you wonder what the point of the rule change was!

And I agree. The FA should have the power to rule on any potential red card incidents retrospectively, whether the ref witnessed or not.

The nonsensical rule that annoyed me (not sure if it is still in place), is that a club can appeal a straight red card, but they cannot appeal a red that resulted from two yellows. I remember Didi gettign two yellows at Arsenal once, and one of them was clearly wrong, but not only did he get incorrectly sent of, we also had to accept the 1 match ban that followed

Those rules have an upside. It means when you are wronged there is no alternative remedy with the FA. So your remedy is now with the court. Didi Haman's wage for that week was probably £50k. The lost points will be worth another £500k odd. The image of being a dirty team will cost another £500k of sponsorship. Not even that millionaire Swiss ref would survive me. Rather he would suffer me, then disappear from the game.

Age must be blurring my memory. I seem to remember, in general, always being happy if Halsey was refereeing us. But I must be wrong.
