Penny pinching on VVD, missing out on Lukaku, signing the likes of Barkley, Drinkwater; the days of Chelsea throwing their cash around and getting exactly who they want seems to be coming to an end. Is this all part of a long term plan and a new fiscally responsible set up at Chelsea? Their transfer policy seems very odd to me, especially when you factor in Conte's statements that he isn't in charge of who they sign, he just offers his opinions. In my eyes I can only see it hurting them long term, they seem to be signing more average players, and seem to lack that ruthlessness that brought Drogba, Essien, Shevchenko, Torres, Luiz, Mata and Hazard into the club. With the emergence of City, United, and even us, as teams able to match and surpass their wealth, are the days of Chelsea buying the league long gone?

N.b, I realise this is a process that's been happening over the last 3 or 4 years, but the signings this year, especially the Drinkwater and Barkley deals, have really hit this point home for me.

Missed out on Lukaku, bought Morata for £70m.

And in the same window, Bakayoko (£40m), Rudiger (£31m), Zappacosta (£25m) and the aforementioned Drinkwater (£30m)

Boohoo

Whilst they spent another 150m+, they seem to be buying a lower standard of player.

Is it because of a strict wage bill?

Roman seems to be tightening the strings there, for sure. Hopefully they continue with their mediocre purchases and Hazard fcuks off to Madrid in the summer.

Roman has to fund a stadium which will cost in excess of £1bn. Another divorce on the cards as he's separated from his wife. Hope she takes him to the cleaners for half. Plus their master mind director of football has left

They have had periods when they've bought very few players, even under Mourinho. It seems to be a bit cyclical, and certainly the manager (or Head Coach) has never been in sole charge of who they do/ don't buy.

But certainly I would agree that they do seem to be "settling" (or having to) for perhaps less stellar names, but that's partly because the two Manchester clubs have become viable alternatives in terms of appeal and finances, as well as the likes of PSG.

And thanks to Klopp, also us.

Could be RA is bored with this toy and with the onset of Arab led clubs having even more financial muscle, he's cycling down with a view to getting shut once they become self sufficient and run as a football club actually should.

Yeh, obviously they still have serious clout, point was that their days of having the market at their mercy seem to be over. They used buy players for extortionate fees who were at the top of their game, not so much so recently.

Yeah the standard of players they are buying now seem very average. Never rated Morata so i didn't give a shit that they bought him. But signing the likes of drinkwater seems very un-chelsea like. Thankfully Bakayoko and Rudiger seem a bit pony. Hazard is pretty much carrying that team.

Maybe they've just ran out of places to loan out all the players they already own.

Everyone wanted Bakayoko after his Monaco CL performances, and while Drinkwater seems rather, er, uninspiring, they did spend the same amount on a player from the same club in Kante, and he did OK.

They’ve always mixed up their buys from the ‘second-tier’ almost- Galactico signings like Torres, Ballack, Shevchenko, Morata, with slightly more prosaic, ‘local’ signings such as Parker, Cahill, Moses etc

And while the manager has never been in charge of who they sign, I think some players are put off by the managerial merry-go-round and the stockpiling of squad players.

And no, they certainly aren’t the biggest payers and richest club anymore, following the Arab invasion of elite football, and nor do they have that aura of invincibility

The real interesting thing with Chelsea, for mw anyway, is Hazard and Courtouis refusing to sign extentions.

Oh Hazard definitely wants out and he wants Real Madrid. If Zidane keeps his job he will definitely buy him in the summer. Apparently Courtouis also wants to go to Real Madrid.

They have both said : "I'll sign after he does". They are both clearly waiting until the Summer to try and get out.

Whilst it seems like they've lowered their standard for signings, they're actually being very shrewd

Zappacosta and rudiger both in fine form in Italy, and bedded them in slowly here. Both positions they needed and weren't overly fleeced for good solid players.

Drinkwater seems uninspiring but he plays the exact game they wanted in their midfield 2, which is sensible and consistent passing ability to set the front 2 (and 2 wbs) away. He was never planned to be a consistent starter, but works well

Then they bought the more "galactico" signings, no doubt to appease the fans clamouring for a name. Bakayoko was fantastic for Monaco last season and was all action, to distract from the losing to matic. He's struggled but young enough to learn and adapt.

Morata... well I thought he'd be shite and so far he's not done much to dispell that. Good in the air, crap on the floor

If they turned their attention away from the "big names" which everyone expects, they've managed to pick up a few decent players over the years, who seem to integrate very well in to the squad. It's the ones they buy for the shirt sales that struggle

They've spent big still, but they've been pretty mediocre signings to be fair, at least in terms of immediate impact. The main thing is, they're still challenging. So as said, they've been in the fortunate position of already having good players in many of the positions they have strengthened, so it's given them the luxury of being able to be patient with their new signings.
