This new format is a bit of a mess so far. I have no idea what’s going on anymore. What does a first game win in a 36 team league? Some big scores, games on thursday,18 games, too old for this…

This new format almost guarantees that all the big names will make the last 16 every single season. Win-win for them and for UEFA.

Tbh Froggy, it’s no different to how it was before.

8 teams from pot 1 and 6-7 teams from pot 2 with the odd team or 2 from pot 3 made the last 16 for the last 30 years

Sides like Salzburg, Bratislava, Brugge, Young Boys etc have no chance regardless the format you have.

Just a note on finance. The money pot is, as always, split into two. The allocation of one part of the pot is pretty easy to do, the other isn't really possible on public information so you need to do a rough and ready estimate.

So for the first bit, you're looking at the following (all numbers in sterling at 1.18 € to the £):

Fixed fee - £15.8m (guaranteed)
Win in group stage - £1.8m each
Draw £0.6m each
Qualify for knock-outs £9.3m
Quater finals £10.6m
Semis £12.7m
Final £15.7m
Win £5.5m

So if you had 4 wins, 2 draws in the group stage and went on to win you're looking at £77.9m. The payments after the group stage are incremental for reaching each stage - i.e. if you get to the quarters you get £9.3m plus £10.6m = £19.9m.

On the second pot, €853m, this is divided up based on various factors, including value of the country's media deal and club's 5 year co-efficent. Just using the co-efficient to estimate this, we're UEFA's 4th ranked team, which means we'd get 33 of the 666 shares - estimate of £35.8m.

So to date, we should have earned £53.4m - £35.8m + £15.8m + £1.8m for beating Milan.

Which means if we qualified for the knockouts with 4 wins and 2 draws, and went on to win, you're looking at a figure in the region of £131.3m.

The second pot share is a rough estimate, and the actual payment could be higher as the UK broadcast rights tend to be higher than in the rest of Europe. There's also the possibility of a slightly higher performance share in the group stage as after the fixed payments per result are paid out there's usually a little bit more in the budget which is shared around - usually a few hundred £k per team.

There are lots of so called top teams who on occasion failed to go beyond the old group stage. You'd have 2-3 very good teams in a 'group of death' and of course regularly one would fail to get out since there was far less tolerance after an upset / shock result.

In this format you could lose 4 or 5 games and if you won the remaining 3-4 games still get through in the repacharge or whatever they call it.

Yeah, they can do whatever they want with the format, it's still shite till the knockouts.

Diego Simeone believes the new UEFA Champions League format will force teams to try and win more games.

The new competition structure means teams will now play eight matches, in the league phase, as opposed to six, in the former group stage.

The switch has caused controversy by adding more games to an already packed schedule for players and coaches but Simeone indicated it will bring a more positive tactical approach in the coming weeks.

“This format forces us to win. Before, many draws would have been enough, but now we have to win”, as per reports from Diario AS.

“It requires us to go out and win. If we can’t, we need to get something, but those who win more will be among the top eight.”

The new format is actually a little more exciting than I expected. Superb for smaller clubs like Celtic to get some limelight.

What a night that was for Scottish football.
