Atletico Madrid had hoped to have the ban reduced enabling them to buy players this summer, but CAS have upheld the ban meaning they will not be able to complete the signing of players until January 2018.

Atletico have released a statement detailing their position insisting they have been hard done by and feel CAS has shown a lack of respect to the club.

This resolution is unfair and represents irreparable damage to our club,” it read.
“We wish to reiterate that we have been sanctioned despite strict compliance with Spanish legislation.

Soooo, that's Griezmann , lacazetta, Costa merry-go-round chuffed.

Not necessarily.
Greizmann, if he has a release clause in his contract, can go if another club activates it.
The ban doesn't prohibit transfers out

From what I've read somewhere, this ban is actually on the registration of players, not transfers. So basically, they can still buy a player now, but can't register and play him until the ban is over. This would be similar to the Arda Turan situation when he moved to Barca 2 years ago. So I suppose they can still get Lacazette / Costa if the player is willing to sit out half a season.

Are they going to let their top scorer and superstar leave without replacing him?

Can they stop him if the release clause, assuming there is one, is activated?
I wouldn't have thought so.
Sucks to be them.

Some Spanish journos were saying this weekend that Griezmann has decided to leave this summer.
Will be interesting to see what happens.
If any club pay the release clause then there isnt much they can do regardless.

Atletico can still sign players now but they can be registered until 1. January.

I have a funny feeling Laccazette will sit out half a season if Griezmann goes. Although he's stated his desire to play alongside him, he'll view it as an opportunity to replace Torres as #1 very early if Griezmann isn't in the picture come January.

Doubt any top player would agree to sit out half a season in a World Cup year.

Ah didn't realise he had a release clause

Best hope he's loyal then,eh?

I doubt that. Maybe Atletico will convince Griezmann to stay now. It could at least influence a lot of transfer deals around Europe.

They could increase the release clause by offering him a massive pay increase and 1 year loyalty bonus. They won't be signing anyone so may as well spend a lot of money to keep him for a year. He's probably worth 20 million per year for them as he is the difference between them challenging and struggling to get into the top 6.

They could write in the contract that his release clause drops again to 90mil once the transfer ban is lifted.

It's been in the media that he has but you never know.
Let's hope he hasn't or that he feels a sense of loyalty to Atletico.
Unless of course that Torres has persuaded him about the attraction of playing at Anfield

Unless they offer him a new contract (which he wouldn't sign since he's already said he wants out and he's 60% sure he's going to United) then they can't manipulate the one he's got. Though they could just offer him a massive bonus to stay for another season. I'm sure nothing he can't get at United though. It's a great pity because he is the perfect replacement for Ibrahimovic.

Its quite a decent fee though;

And now it has emerged, via Spanish publication okdiario.com, the France international has a £95m (€110m) release clause in his Atletico contract.

I suspect the Greizmann wouldn't roll the club over in this situation, but you never know with footballers. If he does go, they're right in the shit and might have to drop out of europe qualification next year, their first year in their new stadium.

Atletico aren't a one man team, losing one player does not put them in the shit.

Oh is it a World Cup year again next year? Damn, I've lost so much interest in that tournament these days I've lost track of that. It's going to turn into a Mickey Mouse tournament in another two editions anyway with the 48-team format; I suppose I'm just getting started early in being apathetic towards it.

Foreign clubs cant activate the release clause.

"The other factor that's significant is that the buyout clause is a Spanish agreement. When it comes to international transfers -- to bids from aboard like the one supposedly from Chelsea -- it is irrelevant. Except as a symbolic price, a reference point from which you can negotiate."
