Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher has made the controversial choice of picking former Manchester United captain Roy Keane as the heart beat in his “Greatest XI†alongside former Kop legend Graeme Souness.
Talking to FourFourTwo magazine the Kop Hero picked Keane, who won 7 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cup crowns, and the UEFA Champions League with the Red Devils, alongside former reds enforcer Graeme Souness in the middle of the midfield.
Carragher explained his decision to include the United hero:
“And talking of Roy Keane, I’d have him alongside Souey at the heart of midfield. The Man United skipper may be a little short of Souness in the passing department but he has so much drive, he can get forward into the box to score vital goals, and he can also put his foot in. “ He continued.
“And let’s be perfectly honest, the opposition would have trouble imposing their game on Souey and Keano!â€
While Carragher was complimentary of the Republic of Ireland captain, the Liverpool centre-half was eager to press his admiration for Liverpool legend Souness:
“‘Souey’ had everything. You don’t see many players who can put their foot in and also dictate a game the way he could. It’s not just about tackling, it’s also about passing too. “ He said.
“Obviously Steven Gerrard is a great player and maybe in years to come he can compare to Souness, but I’ve seen videos of Graeme and he was probably more like Roy Keane and Glenn Hoddle rolled into one.â€
CARRAGHERS GREATEST XI:
1. Neville Southall
2. Cafu
3. Paolo Maldini
4. Franco Baresi
5. Marcel Desailly
6. Zinedine Zidane
7. Graeme Souness
8. Roy Keane
9. John Barnes
10. Marco Van Basten
11. Kenny Dalglish
