Eric Cantona believes Didier Deschamps may have left out France players on racial grounds

Eric Cantona has controversially suggested the ethnicity of Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa may have been a factor in the France manager Didier Deschamps leaving the pair out of his squad for next month’s European Championship.

Ben Arfa, a former Newcastle forward, was only named on standby despite a brilliant season for Nice that has seen him linked with a move to Barcelona. But it is Benzema’s exclusion after he was questioned by police in connection with an alleged attempt by one of his friends to blackmail his international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape which is given particularly short shrift by Cantona, who turned 50 on Tuesday.

The French legend, in an exclusive interview on his 50th birthday, says Pep Guardiola is the only manager capable of ‘changing Manchester’ and explains why he will be cheering on England at Euro 2016 – not France

Cantona described the French prime minister, Manuel Valls, as a hypocrite because he urged Deschamps to leave Benzema out while French politicians embroiled in scandal stay in their jobs. “Benzema is a great player. Ben Arfa is a great player,” Cantona told the Guardian. “But Deschamps, he has a really French name. Maybe he is the only one in France to have a truly French name. Nobody in his family mixed with anybody, you know. Like the Mormons in America.

“So I’m not surprised he used the situation of Benzema not to take him. Especially after Valls said he should not play for France. And Ben Arfa is maybe the best player in France today. But they have some origins. I am allowed to think about that.”

Asked if he was really suggesting that Deschamps – a former France team-mate who he also described as “a muppet” – had been guilty of discriminating against the pair, Cantona added: “Maybe no, but maybe yes. Why not? One thing is for sure – Benzema and Ben Arfa are two of the best players in France and will not play the European Championship. And for sure, Benzema and Ben Arfa, their origins are north African. So, the debate is open.”

Deschamps declined to comment when contacted by the Guardian.

Cantona, who won the last of his 45 caps for France in 1995, has never enjoyed the healthiest relationship with Les Bleus and insists he will be supporting Roy Hodgson’s England instead this summer.

One of the great international sporting festivals will take place against a backdrop of rising right-wing nationalism across the continent, a spiralling refugee crisis and security fears in a country left on edge by November’s terror attacks in Paris.

“For sure, if France win the European Championship the politicians will use that success – just as they did [after the World Cup] in ’98. But it’s just politics,” said Cantona, who this week launched ITV’s marketing campaign for its sports coverage this summer. “The people from the right, they use this situation. They mix everything. They mix up Daesh, the bombing, the refugees. We have to be cleverer. There are people here who really need help. They are the ones we should think about.”

Hahahaha pure class.

Is it not just because one is a blackmailing cunt and the other one is a fat lazy cunt with attitude problems ?

Maybe, or maybe not. When you have cowards like Deschamps who drop people without the balls to give an explanation, then you leave it open for other people like Cantona who will sniff out that weakness, prey upon it, then launch a devastating attack.

France team for 2014 World Cup under Deschamps. Looks like a Klan rally.

If he pulls out that picture, it will be the equivalent of I'm not racist, see I have black friends, wah wah wah. Hahahah Cantona has ended him in a single strike which even I have to admire. There's no comeback for Deschamps.

There is one. "Fuck off Cantona, you mad cunt. And one more word alleging racism about me and I will see you in court"

Cantona's lawyer: Your concerns are noted. It is further noted that you have no concerns about the related allegation that you are an inbred Mormon.

Except that Deschamps has publicly backed Benzema to the extent possible in the past.

Benzema himself has said he has the support of Deschamps.

"I had messages from him when he named the squad," Benzema told TF1 programme Telefoot. "We talked via text message. He's behind me and he supports me. I talk often with him."

Cantona is hitting out against Deschamps because he viewed himself as a much superior player and missed out on the medals he could have gotten for France in 90s.

Has Cantona got a book coming out or tsomething? He was having a whinge about Mourinho not being the right man too

Euro 2016: France boss Deschamps to sue Cantona over racism accusation

Lawyers for France's football manager Didier Deschamps say he will sue Eric Cantona for suggesting his Euro 2016 squad selection was racially motivated.

Cantona said on Thursday that Deschamps intentionally left two players of African origin, Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa, out of the squad.

"Benzema is a great player. Ben Arfa is a great player," he told the Guardian.

"But Deschamps, he has a really French name. Maybe he is the only one in France to have a truly French name."

He went on to say: "Ben Arfa is maybe the best player in France today. But they have some origins. I am allowed to think about that."

Speaking to French sports newspaper L'Equipe, Deschamps' lawyer called the remarks "unacceptable, slanderous and defamatory" and said his client would sue.

Benzema's failure to qualify comes after he was issued a domestic ban for his involvement in an alleged blackmail scandal over a sex tape.

France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls said publicly before the selection that the Real Madrid striker "has no place" in the team.

Ben Arfa, who plays for Nice and previously played for Newcastle and Hull, is among the reserves for the tournament so could still be called up to cover for injury.

Noel Le Graet, the head of the French Football Federation, called Cantona's allegation "ridiculous."

Cantona and Deschamps, who are former France teammates, have fallen out numerous times since they played together in the mid-1990s.

Cantona has previously called Deschamps a "muppet" and a "vulgar water carrier", a football insult implying Deschamps was good only to pass the ball to others.

Cantona was dropped from the French national team in 1995 after he attacked a fan during a Manchester United game with a kung fu-style kick.

He never played for France again.

'Deschamps should be flattered - Ryan Gosling is a Mormon' – Cantona explains France boss criticism

The former player suggested Hatem Ben Arfa and Karim Benzema have been overlooked by France because of their African heritage, but has gone on to explain his comments

Eric Cantona has moved to explain his criticism of France boss Didier Deschamps' decision to leave Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa out of Euro 2016.

The former Manchester United star suggested in an interview that Benzema and Ben Arfa had been overlooked for the finals on home soil due to their north African heritage.

Cantona also said of Deschamps: "He has a really French name. Maybe he is the only one in France to have a truly French name. Nobody in his family mixed with anybody, you know. Like the Mormons in America."

The comments caused a storm in France, with Deschamps threatening legal action against Cantona, while French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet branded the remarks "a pathetic attack".

The 50-year-old, who had a fractious relationship with the national team during his playing career, has now ridiculed any suggestions of an "anti-white" agenda.

He has also said Deschamps should be "flattered" to be compared to Mormons in the United States, given that Hollywood star Ryan Gosling was raised in a family that followed the faith.

"In this period of disorder and division, I would wish for all of France to be represented in the France team," he said in a message published in Le Journal du Dimanche.

"For me, football is a great vehicle for integration and it can serve to unite, to unify.

"This opportunity was missed by not selecting Benzema and Ben Arfa, two of the best French players. Firstly, I think this is a mistake in a sporting sense. Furthermore, the European Championship – in France, moreover – is a festival in which there is an extraordinary opportunity to send a clear message to extremists of any kind.

"Incidentally, those who want to attach any label to me, or to use my words for their own purposes, I want to clarify that I am not a puppet of any ideology. I am an atheist: I am, and always will be, a free man!

"And what's more, when I speak of Mormons, Mr Deschamps should feel flattered: Ryan Gosling is Mormon and is the fantasy of every woman.

"And for those who want to believe that I added to anti-white racism, my answer is nothing but contempt."
[/article]

Hahhaha Deschamps is headed for a mental breakdown.

Oh dear. Epic non-ideological fail. Dworkins has a lot to answer for.

Lack of belief cannot be regarded as an ideological belief in and of itself. What would that even be, "I believe in my lack of belief in your ideological belief". No, it cannot be.

Quite. But you don't, unlike the current fashion, embrace atheism as a belief. Hume knew that, as did Wittgenstein, as did Russell, as did many until good old Richard came around to excite various stand-up comics and sundry Guardian readers. It's nothing to boast about.

Agree with all of that, but would add that Nietzsche arguably got there before Squawkins.

Well, I have the luxury of knowing why the universe exists. Otherwise I have some sympathy with scientists who misrepresent atheism in order to paper over that fundamental gap in their knowledge.

I don't think it's fair to group populist mongs like Dawkins or Cantona in with Nietzsche, even if Nietzsche's biggest fan is that other moron who thinks he can think, Joey Barton.

Hasn't Cantona always had a bad relationship with Deschamps? Who was it who called him The Water Carrier?

Cantona continues:

I am absolutely not surprised by Benzema’s comments. I’d like to point out that – like me – he has at no point accused Deschamps of racism.

He has only said that Deschamps’ decision was influenced by the public opinion, which is the result of the current political climate in France.

Benzema showed courage with his comments, because he is still playing and is still available for the national team.

I don’t care about the reaction to my comments. Controversies like this last 24 hours during which the morons speak up and then people move on.

Benzema was suspended in between regional elections. The mood has changed in France since Charlie Hebdo. There is a certain attitude toward people of north-African origins.

But Benzema is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. If he is found innocent, he will still have missed the Euros. As for Ben Arfa, he is only guilty of being one of the best two or three best French players out there

So Didier Deschamps will sue me? It’s the first time he’s gone from a defensive position to an attacking one!

Hahahahahah even the judge is going to crack up at that.

I notice how Benzema was initially cool about being dropped. Then, possibly after legal advice, it's suddenly become racist and political. The exact type of stuff which may, I don't know, prejudice a criminal court case. Poor the Valbuena.
