Can we finally put to bed the Lucas myth?

I'm all for jolly stories about ridiculous falsehoods to make the world tick by, so if some of you want to believe that Lucas makes us play better or concede less goals then I'm all for that. I don't want to upset anyone here at all.

But for the grown ups, is it ok to admit that he's actually a pile of pointless shit, hasn't played very often, but when he has played he's been awful and contributed to the two worst defeats of this season?

I think there are a number of candidates that fill the 'myth' nomination at present: Reina, Allen, Gerrard to name a few. Lucas is just another uninspiring player in an uninspiring team led by an uninspiring Manager.

It hurts but it's where we're at.

Ryan is going to come in here and school you, you do know that don't you. He's going to come up with some exotic reasons why he's exempt from blame.

To be fair, I'll let him off for a bit as he's not match fit yet. I'm not so bothered about someone who does such a basic job even when on form - tackle, lay off short pass, create fuck all, score fuck all.
The ones bothering me are Suarez, Gerrard, sterling, Allen, shelvey - they're meant to be creating and scoring and they've all gone off form at the same time.

Fair enough. In a cheese ham and pickle toastie the things you're probably going to have most of a problem with are the cheese ham and pickle. I mean they make the flavour. The bread... well any old bread will do... some breads are nicer in a toastie, don't get me wrong, but really as long as you have nice ham cheese and pickle and the bread isn't particularly shit then it could be lucas, henderson or spearing flavour bread and it wouldn't really make much diff.

Lucas is a nice guy though, he's like fair trade bread which makes you feel better about having it. At least you know when he goes to bed tonight he will be genuinely upset and embarrassed.

On the other hand Spearing or Henderson would have been partying at some club showing off their expensive watches and shoes. Fuck them.

Yeah, you're right. Fuck them all. Instead of having a toastie tonight I'm gonna fire some scuds into illegal settlements in Gaza.

There are plenty of myths emanating from the club these days, Lucas will solve all our problems, Gerrard is still capable of leading the team, This team is good enough to finish in the top 4, the only thing we are missing is a striker

Enough fantasy bullshit for Peter Jackson to make an epic trilogy about us

Lucas is still unfit, and hasn't played a lot of football over the last year. Having said that, our biggest problem is that we've got far too many players who seem reluctant to take any responsibility for the team scoring goals. And the return of Lucas is not going to help in that respect.

One of the big plus points for Lucas was that he would supposedly release Allen and Gerrard from their defensive obligations to play further forward, right now we could do with releasing them of all obligation and sit them on the bench, they have both been dreadful lately, not a one off, Allens season has tailed off after a good start and Gerrard, well his season never really started at all, hes been consistently under performing since August, either that or what we are seeing is his current level of performance and thats it

Allan and Gerrard need a bench spell.

But let's be in no doubt, Lucas is no superman. He was never going to add steel and release other midfielders forward like we have been told.

In his own words, he plays as the second defensive midfielder, I.e, he himself needs protection.

Can we put to bed comments like Gerrard needs a spell on the bench? We might aswell start talking about signing Messi. It's never, ever, going to happen. He's the captain. He might get 'rested' for one game, but there's more chance of us signing Messi than him getting dropped for 3 or 4 games for playing the way he's playing.

The odd thing about Gerrard is that since his nightmare injury the fans have been far more accepting of the fact that his game has had to change than he has. He has lost most of his explosive pace but does that mean he can no longer shoot? I honestly think the reason he is stinking the place out is mental not physical, he just seems so miserable to be a 32yo Stevie that he has completely given up even trying to lead by example. I thinl the ironic thing is that if his head was right a 32yo Stevie could still be a fairly magical player, IMO Rogers should be able to turn to him and point out that a two week holiday in The Lying Rag could help recharge his mojo a bit.

I think a more pertinent point here is that do the senior players have too much influence on the team?

It seems we are not going to progress until they have retired or leave the club because until that happens, the manager, whoever he may be, seems to have no overall power to do as he wishes.

One performance isn't enough to "put anything to bed," Woland. He did quite well against the Hammers, but was surprisingly poor today. He needs a few games to regain his match sharpness. You could see how disappointed he was with his own performance when he got subbed.

Why? On what basis should he continue to be undroppable? Signing Messi is absolutely preposterous, dropping Gerrard is something that can and should happen. He has failed to fire all season, hes played in a few decent cameos but hasn't really had a good 90 mins, hes at the lowest point of his career since he broke into the team.

Whether its mental or physical I have no idea at this point but hes not contributing enough to maintain this idea that he should always be included, he has been accomodated in various formations and lineups and not really worked in any of them, its time to start seeing what the other midfielders in our squad are capable of without his shadow looming over them.

We will never know what sort of midfield we could build from the likes of Sahin Shelvey Lucas Allen Henderson Suso etc as long as we persist with this ridiculous idea that Gerrard must be included no matter what

He's played about 3 full games in 12 months. And you want him to carry the can for that yesterday?

Woland, I love you but this thread is kneekerk shite.

You're talking utter shite on this one Krump. He didn't have a good game yesterday granted but it feels like you we're waiting for that bad game to come along to post this bollocks effort of a topic

sorry not true about Henderson he is not that sort of person.

Thing is, he played against West Brom, 3 conceded, yesterday, 3 conceded, last week, 2 conceded... I thought he was meant to be this thing I didn't understand but had a net effect of us conceding less and playing better. I've never seen that before, and I'm not seeing it now.

I'm not a believer in the myth as everyone knows but as I said when he got injured this year he won't be any good because the knee injury takes nearly two years to get back from.

For who ? Shelvey ? Allen ? Henderson ? Ha !

Yes

Any of them

Gerrard has been sloppy as fuck and at he moment is doing a disservice to the armband and has been for months.

I personally would play sahin and push Allen further forward.

Lucas, Sahin and Allen. Failing that, Henderson should come in from Gerrard.
