Moreno thread has inspired me.

I've put a tenner on us winning our 6th Euro Cup - 22/1.

Any other believers?

Gerrard to lead us in the group stages

Sterling and Studge to take us through the the final.

Super Mario to win it for us....

why not - I know it was pre season and they had the odd player missing ( as we did too ) but we smashed Dortmund. Who is there to fear? Real, Barca, Bayern Chelski. On our day we have any of them. 22- 1 I'm in.

Considering the squad/team we won it with last time, anything is possible. But no, first season in for a lot of young players with no experience of it.

Getting through the group would be a fine achievement. Winning the league cup and finishing fourth would be progress.

It would be a good season but I don't think I could call it progress from a serious and brilliant title challenge.

We should be aiming to win the CL. It's unlikely but certainly possible.

Yes, but that's not progress, it's bloody mad over-achievement. Let's not redefine words. Winning something and staying in the top four would be progress.

Ye me get you, me get you. Just not sure it's progress even with that considered.

Personally I think that would look like top 3 and CL QF.

Here's a lovely picture of a same sex union for you to underline the conciliatory tone of this post.

After 2005 anything is possible but right now I think we think about the first game of the group stage. Did I sound like BR then? In my head I did.

Well, I'd love it if we did.

However I think we should honestly concentrate on ensuring a top 4 finish, as the CL spoils are necessary to keep parity with other clubs chasing Chelsea & city.

Chelsea, City, & to an extent, Utd, could afford to miss out, ourselves, arsenal, spurs, miss out, & we will find it nigh on impossible to keep up financially.

Of CV course we can. That cup is drawn to us and everybody fears us. I only fear Chelsea.

I voted yes just for kicks; don't think we can do it this season. If our defence doesn't improve, we could find ourselves eliminated by the away goals rule in the knockout stage (if we get qualify from our group). You can't afford to be naive in those games.

I was curious about the CL experience in the team before the 2004/2005 run, versus that of the current team entering the same tournament a decade later. Lots of experience in the 2004/2005 starting team, but the current team has more experience beyond the starters (based on the last game against Spurs). What does this mean? Fuck all actually. 😀

I know I shouldn't have been but I was really struck there by how many CL games some of our players had played for us prior to the 2004/05 season. Really adds perspective to Gerard Houllier's reign.

Hmm, I have to relook at some of those numbers again; some seem too high actually. Think I might've added qualification games for some of them (e.g. Dudek, Hyypia) when I actually wanted to count only actual competition games (i.e. group stage onwards)

Okay, numbers updated now; took off about 5 to 8 games from some guys' numbers because I wanted to exclude qualifying round games. The CL format was different during the Houllier era as well, with 2 group stages of 6 games each, so a fair number of games more to play. Houllier's record was a QF exit (after qualifying from 2 group stages of 6 games each) and a 1st group stage exit after 6 games (after drawing 3 - 3 at Basel).

Unfortunately I've won plenty of money betting against LFC over the last 20 years. The profits never made the defeats any more palatable. This season is the first time I've EVER backed us to win stuff; I have £900 on us to win the league @ 12/1 and £100 to win the Champions League @ 27/1.

I think we have every chance of winning our group and from there we have as much chance as anyone else, there are no teams to fear for us.
