Rodgers in battle to stop Liverpool idol Carragher from retiring

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed he faces a struggle to prevent defender Jamie Carragher from hanging up his boots at the end of the season.
Carragher, 34, will captain Liverpool in the FA Cup third round today at Mansfield with Steven Gerrard rested and this could be his last cup run, having won the trophy in 2001 and 2006.
Rodgers wants Carragher to extend his contract before it ends in the summer but talks have been put on hold while the player considers his options.
Carragher, a proud one-club man, is frustrated at being kept out by Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger and could end his playing days elsewhere or retire to pursue a career in coaching or media.

'Jamie's contract is up and we've had loose discussions in terms of where he's at,' said Rodgers.
'It is largely down to him and how he's feeling.

'When you've played so long at the top level and been a key figure, and then don't have a period of playing so much, it gives you some thinking time, "Do I want to put my body through this every day and not have the games I'm used to?"

'You're in the firing line at the back. There is no hiding place for a centre-half. It is not an easy decision for him but do I want him here? Of course.'

Rodgers will also rest Glen Johnson, Pepe Reina and Agger today but there could be places on the bench for top-scorer Luis Suarez and Skrtel as insurance. £12million striker Daniel Sturridge is in the squad and could make his debut.

Carragher, who made his Liverpool debut 16 years ago, has been a great help to the new manager.
'The will and desire of this guy is remarkable. I love every minute of working with him,' said Rodgers.

'It's not been easy for him, but he's from the old school, he has great values and ethics. He's an icon here. He's a wonderful example to any player, incredible.

'He's still in great condition, he looks after himself. He's a wonderful support to me. It [his contract] is a conversation he and I will have again.'

In my face then...

Hopefully he'll move into a coaching role, would be a shame for him to retire and have to go elsewhere to stay in the game, which it seems he wants too.

I am not sure.. her has the capacity to play more regular elsewhere, but I am not sure about the hunger for starting a new place. .

He's already said he wont play for another club. Its either retirement or 1 more year.

Blasphemy
God your tiresome Modo... Its not a admittance that Carra is everything you think he is. Its bloody common sense he should retire he is 34 his best days are behind him. His experience would be better used coaching the youngsters if he can pass over half the desire and commitment he had to some of these youngsters coming through they would have a very good chance of being good players.

How about he tries it out in another smaller club and then come back if he's doing a good job.

He actually said the opposite prior to his latest contract. He stated that if he wasn't in the team then he'd leave Liverpool for another club. Apparently £90,000 per week for an occasional appearence changed his mind.

Carragher has come a long way since his younger days trashing Ince's house with his scally friends whilst attending a party there. He's been involved in some of our most memorable triumphs and was part of the superb defence along with Hyypia, Finnan and Riise.

When I think of Carra, his heroics at the Attaturk spring to mind. Incredible last ditch blocks and tackles and fighting cramp to carry on for the team. Magnificent.

When I picture him with the ball facing forward, however, I see him hoofing the ball straight to the opposing side's centre halves.

Will Rodgers want him as a coach teaching this style of play?

Carra as a coach - I see what you're saying Peter, but at the same time he has tended to bring out the best in his CD partner. As a player - surely that's one of the expensive contracts we should be happy to have off the books.

I can only think of Hyppia who I would rather see as a defensive coach before Carra, but even when Sammi was there it was still Carra who was organising the defence. Defenders defend first and bring the ball out and pass neatly second.
Carra also has the passion for the game and the club, it's a no brainer as far as I am concerned.

Im pretty sure he will go and play somewhere else.
Hes not finished at all and he loves playing. He would start right now for QPR, Sunderland, Wigan, West Ham, Southampton, Villa, Newcastle and probably one or two more teams.
Saying he should retire just because WE dont want to play him is bollocks.

I don't think he will old chum. He has alluded previously that he doubted that he could see himself playing for anyone else and dropping his sights, and I would respect that.
Could you see Giggs or Scholes playing for QPR, Sunderland, Wigan, West Ham, Southampton, Villa, Newcastle ? I would rather go out at the top too, assuming I did not need the money or could not get another job in the game.

In his autobiography he said he wouldnt think twice about playing elsewhere if he wasnt playing here. He said that what was important to him was playing and that as long as he felt he could play he would play on.
I read it a couple of yeears ago.

I spoke to him in 2005, a few months after Istanbul.

He said at that time of he couldn't stay at Liverpool he'd like to see out his career working under the likes of Phil Thompson at a lower league club but couldn't see himself ever being able to play against Liverpool.

Lots happened since but the fella seemed to know his mind & watched more football than anyone else I've ever known, so I'd be unsurprised if that's still the case.

He said he wouldnt play for another club in an interview a month ago, his autobiography was written in 07/08 when he was still only 30 years old. Things change during 4 more years.

I think he's a fantastic person to have in the squad for Rodgers. Great with younger players, all the experience in the world and respected. In the dressing room he'll be very hard to replace I can imagine.

If he hangs up his boots, he has to stay on as a coach. People talking about hoofing doesnt get it. You've got one of the most natural defenders around that can teach young players who need to develop and can be so lucky to learn from someone like Carra.
The technical bit is left to other coaches.

I love Carra, but I think he should retire. The game has passed him by in the Premier League, and he knows it. One more year would just be one to many imho.
He'll be missed though, greatly.

I think you're belittling Hyypia's leadership on the pitch. I seem to remember that the Finn had an armband with a big "C" on it for a few years.
For the record I don't think Carra was shit.
From 2005-2009, Carra was part of the best defensive partnership we've had in the last 20 years.
The last year was alongside Agger for the most part and we only let in 27 goals.
But the first name I think of when someone says legendary Liverpool defender is Alan Hansen and imo they're miles apart.

Yes but Joey Jones was a legendry Liverpool defender too, so where does that leave the argument?

Vlad, Modo HATES the English so youre on a hiding to nothing.
If Carragher was German he'd be one of Modo's favourite players ever.
Dont empower his hatred.

I don't understand why Modo doesn't get that just because Jamie Carragher is looked upon as a legend of the club doesn't mean that Sami and Hansen are therefore diminished.

Kenny is The King.

Keegan is still, STILL an all-time great.

It's like he has a set number for each position and that's it !
