Bolton's Marcos Alonso 'at wheel of car involved in woman's death in Madrid

Bolton defender Marcos Alonso will appear before a Madrid court on Tuesday morning to face charges over a crash that left a female passenger dead.
The former Real Madrid full back could be charged with involuntary homicide after a breath test at the scene showed his alcohol levels to be almost twice that permitted under Spanish law.

Paramedics fought to save the woman after Alonso's car overturned on Monday morning. She was not breathing after being pulled from the wreckage, and was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arriving at hospital.

Three other passengers in the car, including Alonso's friend and former Real Madrid team-mate Jaime Navarro, were taken to the hospital with injuries that were thought not to be life-threatening.

Alonso, 20, who had returned to Madrid for a break after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Blackburn, was unhurt.

He was said to be so shaken, however, that he had an anxiety attack which left him unable to take a follow-up breath test.

Magistrates will this morning confirm the charge against him and decide whether to keep him in custody or release him on bail ahead of his hearing.

Bolton's Spanish defender Marcos Alonso has been charged with reckless homicide after he was involved in a drunk-driving accident in Madrid that killed a young woman, a court said Tuesday.

The presiding judge also temporarily removed his driving licence and banned him from driving in Spain for as long as the investigation into the accident lasts, the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid said in a statement.

Alonso, 20, crashed his vehicle into a wall in the Spanish capital early on Monday, killing a female passenger and injuring three other passengers.

The player, who suffered light injuries in the accident, was also charged with violating road safety, reckless injury and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

He was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.45, above the legal limit of 0.25, daily newspaper El Pais reported.

Alonso has made eight appearance for Bolton since joining the English club from Real Madrid in July 2010 on a three-year deal.

His grandfather played for Real in the 1950s and 60s and his father spent five years at Barcelona in the 1980s.
