Rafael Benitez is the best coach in the world according to three of the continent's best known newspapers.
Spain's AS and Marca, plus Italian broadsheet La Gazzetta dello Sport conducted online polls asking their readers to vote for the best coach in world football.

Liverpool's manager was an overwhelmingly popular figure and came out on top, winning more votes than the likes of Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Fabio Capello, Marcello Lippi, Vicente Del Bosque and Barcelona's Josep Guardiola.

In Marca, Rafa got 44 per cent of the vote to finish ahead of Guardiola (28 per cent) and Wenger (7 per cent).

Meanwhile, in AS, Benitez took 34 per cent with Guardiola in second place (19 per cent) and Spain's Head Coach Del Bosque third (15 per cent).

Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport had Rafa out in front with 24.6 per cent, ahead of Ferguson (17.2 per cent) and Mourinho (15 per cent)

As much as I hate the cunt, Ferguscum is probably the best in the world.

As a coach? It's hard to say, really, as he's always relied on specialist no2s. As a manager, however, there's no doubt about it whatsoever. He's been the best in the world, judged on consistency alone, for the last fifteen years.

Rafa's being judged here purely on his tactical nous, I think - and fair enough, I'd back him against anyone in a 'chess game' scenario. However, the idea that Guardiola, after less than one full season, is being picked ahead of Ferguson and Wenger (not to mention Capello and others) clearly indicates that the voters are not really thinking about what they're doing.

Agreed....its in the management areas that Rafa falls behind Rummy but he has along time to catch up, Fergusons been building his reputation for decades. As a coach tho theres not many better than Rafa.

It all depends on how you rate managers. Personally I rate managers who've won trophies with different teams in different nations.

Hiddink for me.
Dutch champion with PSV several times.
European cup (PSV as well)
Getting south Korea to semi's in the world cup, getting Australia to the world cup and past the group stage almost winning against Italy that's fantastic. Getting Russia past England to the European championship. He did great for the Dutch as well.

Benitez however is not far off.
Winning the league in Spain with the likes of Real and Barca is not a small achievment don't forget the Uefa cup.
CL and FA cup with us.

What Sir Alex has done is also incredible but right now I'd pick Hiddink before Ferguson.

You're rating managers based on trophies, yet your number one manager's only ever won one trophy of real note 2 decades ago.

Listen, I hate the purplenosed bastard, but to suggest Ferguson's not as great a manager as Guus Hiddink is ridiculous. It's like saying Venables was better than Paisley.

What impresses me with Hiddink is that he often takes charge of small teams or small nations and makes them stronger. I've already mentioned Russia, Korea and Australia but I remember him taking PSV to the CL semi's the same year we won it.
OK, I was bit off with my statement about winning trophies but still Hiddink is the one that I'd pick right now and If you look at his record the only team he's spent a significant period of time with is PSV, so naturally he won most of his honours there.

Sir Alex did great at Aberdeen and has done a fantastic job at Man U but I wonder how he would have done abroad (Outside the British Isles).

What's struck me about Hiddink is that he seems to, for the last 10 years, have favored jobs where losing is OK. Since Madrid it's been low pressure / low expectation jobs.

Yawn, do the cunts who voted in this poll discern between a 'manager' and a 'coach'? Does such a distinction exist? Or even fucking matter?

Well?

Exactly

Pointless waste of fucking time

The fact Guardiola is second indicates what rubbish this is.
[/quote]

Yep

You may all laugh at Guardiola being second, but it won't be long before the usual Barca-worshipping bell-ends claim he should be our next manager as soon as anything goes wrong

The measure of any manager is this: given the resources of any of the other contenders, and the time frame they have had to date, could he do as well or better.

Rafa must be close to Ferguson and I would think Mourinho, Hiddinck, Lippi and Capello would also be in contention. Conclusion : impossible to judge.

You think Rafa is the fifth best coach in the world? You never have a good thing to say about him!

Well, thinking about it now, I'd put Del Bosque ahead of him.
He's a good manager not a great one. There is a big gap between the top 3 and the rest.

Why? And do you really think Mourinho - whom I also rate highly - is that far ahead of Lippi?

I'm surprised i missed this very interesting article. It's amazing how so many other people seem to rate Rafa as a great coach.
