Some interesting (if rather speculative) links today. I also didn't realise Schweinsteiger is available on a free at the end of the season - what a signing he'll be for someone.

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs is to be offered £200,000 a week to finish his career in Dubai. United midfielder Paul Scholes and defender Gary Neville can also expect lucrative deals from Middle East clubs. Top outfits in the UAE League, including Al Ahli, have already discussed signing the trio next summer.

Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Schweinsteiger who is a free agent at the end of the season.

Former Chelsea and West Ham assistant manager Steve Clarke has failed to agree personal terms with Newcastle over a deal to become Chris Hughton's number two at St James' Park.

Hughton and Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson are 6-4 joint-favourites with bookmakers to be the next Premier League manager to get the sack. West Ham boss Avram Grant is 7-4. (Racing Post)

With the Hammers bottom of the table after picking up only six points from nine games, Grant has two games to save his job.

Hodgson says he has discovered Liverpool's answer to Chelsea centre-back John Terry - and it is Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos. The Reds boss says Kyrgiakos can head the ball as well as Terry, former Arsenal defender Tony Adams and ex-Leeds centre-back Jack Charlton.

Adam could potentially leave Blackpool for pennies after they tried to diddle him on bonuses. He's having a court hearing this week. His contract stipulated he would earn a bonus if the team stayed up in the Championship. Amazingly the club didn't pay on the basis that they didn't stay in the Championship (they were promoted!)

I rate him very highly, and would certainly take him. As I've said elsewhere, I think his range of passing and his awareness makes him the closest thing in the league to an Alonso.

Carew would be terrific with Torres..

He is old.. but that doesnt matter.. If we are going to try and keep our better players instead of cashing in then we need to improve the first team straight away. no waiting for potential to blossom.

Well, cards on the table, I'm an Ulster Scot, with loads of Scots relations and a Scots wife.

I've always liked Adam though. From a young age he has had a fantastic passing ability and a terrific shot. If we bought him then we could definitely say goodbye to Lucas.

I would prefer Uniteds targets personally... and we should be in for schweinsteiger also. Lowering our expectations with talk of "statistics" all week is probably a good move though.

They are on a winner all round really, big club bought cheaply with fans who will be grateful for any reasonably good signing ( which doesnt involve selling a star before their arrival).

I really hope we buy in some good attacking talent.

I do too. I just rate Adam, but I'd still like to see us sign 'big'.

I think it would be very difficult for them to make a "big" signing tbh Mark, primarily because it highly unlikely we can get back into the CL for next season and the "big" players only need to look at the team to know that.

I wish we had got VDV i really do, he's been touted as a player for years and years and obviously had a point to prove after "flopping" at Real. I would have much prefered him to the dissapointing Cole for example.

Regardless of the need to get back into the CL sooner rather than later i suspect that even if NESV are actually interested in making a good go of it and not intending to just "flip" us their investment will be in summer not January.

I'm hopeful that they can spot we really need to be competitive next season and that we will need some class bought in to help us get the extra CL income back, stats and bargains and youth players are indeed the right way to go but wenger added those things to a team which already had your Bergkamps etc... its a big job on their hands, they will need deep pockets for a while yet i suspect.

As a side note( because i lost the thread the other day) im always stunned to see peoples responses on here to the question "who would you like to see signed" and then peope go on to list names of good players plying their trade at our direct competitors... you might as well as say Messi, ronaldo and Iniesta are three new signings. Bale FFS as if!

If we are looking to s¡gn a big name it will be on the basis of buying them from abroad I suspect, probably from a cash strapped team who have good fringe players in their bloated squads, another VDV type signing if you like. Barca have got big money worries, the new board taking La porta to court for finacial mismanagement which previously very good slightly unused players perhaps with a point to prove do they have???

Bollocks Ross. This was a separate bonus. In championship pay packets these bonuses are important. There was a promotion bonus (which the players had to fight for), but this was a separate bonus that had been agreed essentially for avoiding relegation. Which they clearly did. It is niggardly in the extreme of the club to refuse to pay out.

Why are Lyon so keen to offload Lisandro? He's a good, hard working player.
[/quote]

I don't know.

He's the name mentioned that really excites me. Cracking player, real quality and arrogance about his play (Cantona like?)

I'd love him at Anfield alongside Torres.

He cost them 24-28 million and he won the Lige 1 player of the year in his first season. I think that story is bollocks.

If we are looking at Lyon players I would be more interested in Michel Bastos

In regards to Lisandro ... His agent has already mentioned in the French media that Liverpool are interested.

Personally my mind is not made up about him, but most Lyon supporters love him. He's a very grumpy individual, always angry and is not good for the team environment. He also makes his fights with Claude Puel very public.

Another player the French media are linking to us is Dimitri Payet and for a measly 8 million euro transfer fee, which is a bargain. Inter are also interested though. I rate Payet highly, very high. He's a great player with very commendable personality and character.

Apart from his sublime behaviour, this season he's really come of age. His ability on dead ball situations are second to none but also in creating scoring opportunities but also scoring himself. He's a very intelligent player. For 8 million euros, it's a bargain!!! Hodgson has been tracking him closely.

It would be a great signing for Liverpool...

adam to be the next gary mcallister

schweinsteiger would be amazing

gerrard meireles schweignsteiger adam
gerrard lucas mascherano alonso

we'd be returning to similar overall quality in the middle of a few seasons ago
