Did we really need an inarticulate one line thread started about your stupid knee jerk reaction to mere speculation?

I don't think he's a WUM.

I bet 80% of non forum Reds around the world share his concern.

The other 20% of us are just more used to being linked with wishy washy, dog turd - week in week out.

We are in a reactive market to a certain extent. There are a very few clubs right now who are setting the agenda spending massive amounts. Other than squad purchases, there will be a lot of waiting by the other large clubs, and a domino effect of purchasing after they make their move. So yea, this transfer season could be a failure, but given whats going on thus far, in June I think it might be a bit premature.

Wow. New forumite who may well be unaware of the rules of the game ... and everyone jumps on him like a rotten apple.

It's tough love and quality control rolled up into one. No one jumped on him the last couple times.

there seems to be a lot of reds in a panic and as far as I can see, for no reason. imho we could go into the new season with NO new signings and if we kept everyone fit we'd challenge.

Whilst I would veer more to that line of thinking than the panic stations some seem to be displaying, we must assume the other clubs will improve their personnel, and it was proven last season that we need a little bit more depth in certain areas. I would not for one second assume Torres would go a whole season without injury and Gerrard seems to be a little bit more susceptible to injury too.

I sort of agree, although it's crucial we don't sell any of our best players (ie Xabi) for that tactic to work.

NONE of the names above Rafael would sign.

Keith Lamb, the Middlesbrough chief executive, says Stewart Downing will be sold if the club receive an acceptable offer for the winger.

Downing is currently recovering from a foot injury sustained in the penultimate game of the season against Aston Villa but Lamb does not expect that to put off any interested parties. Middlesbrough, who were relegated from the Premier League, are willing to listen to offers for a player who has come through the ranks at the Riverside.

"Who knows whether Stewart will be here in August," he said. "If he is he will be playing for us in the Championship. But if the right offer comes along he will be allowed to leave."

Lamb is confident the 24-year-old will make a full recovery from his injury. "It has been suggested he could be out for as long as six months but he is quite a good healer and we hope he will be back before then," the chief executive said. "There is no reason why Stewart won't make a full recovery.

"He has been told that by the surgeon and he believes it. If someone wants to take a chance on him now, it's up to them. It's out of our hands."

Downing put in a transfer request in January with Tottenham Hotspur making several bids to try to take him to White Hart Lane but Middlesbrough refused to sanction a move with their top flight status in doubt.

What you like does not really matter. What matters is what Rafael want because he has to get the right signings and win the league this season.

If we couldn't convince Downing to play for us I think we should all give up hope.

On a serious basis though, I agree with Spidey & Bunny.

There seems to be this myth that money spent by opposition clubs equals improvement when it patently isn't always the case - Berbatov, Shevchenko, etc, then there becomes a danger we panic and underestimate our own ability. I'm sure last summer people had concerns about Villa and Spurs breaking into the top four, for instance.

Arsenal will be stronger next year because it's unlikely they'll suffer another severe injury list, but we're still better than them. City are a slight concern but there's no need to worry just yet. Chelsea could go either way but they'll be right in the mix till the end. United will be favourites.

Not much change really.

Providing Torres is fit all year, Xabi stays, and our big-spend transfer is successful then we're in with a very real shout of the title.

I'm in a slight panic.

Every single rumour/story/transfer regarding us is generally a fucking disaster

We're broke and we want to sign Jap's Eye, Distin and whoever else is cheap.

And the rest we can't afford

Dismal summer, I fear, as we watch our rivals, Real and Arab clubs, buy everyone

Whatever happens this summer it can't be less progressive than last summers window, and we still ended up competing for the title. That sounds desperately unambitious and maybe we do have a right to expect better, but I think it's important not to concentrate on the Kaka's, Ribery's of this world and focus more on players who're right and practical for us.

By all reports we've got around £25-30M plus player sales to spend on improving our first eleven - and it's important to note we've got plenty of dead wood to lose providing we can shift it.

With that level of resources it should be simple to find a more effective player than Albert Riera - currently our weak link, as well as finding a decent RB and providing enough players are sold, a back-up striker too.

We also can't underestimate the importance of keeping Fernando Torres fit all year. It's more a cross your fingers and hope for the best rather than a 'target' but should it happen we'll certainly pick up more points this season

I see a back up striker, capable of playing on his own upfront, both holding the ball up & contributing some goals, as priority.

Had we had a backup striker capable of replacing Torres (or at least playing in his position, as you cant replace him) we may well have turned some of those draws into wins.

Yeah I probably understated it's importance in that post. I think filling all those positions are essential but we may have to prioritise one over the other depending on what unfolds.

Bent's my first choice for the role

The things is the yanks don't give a shit about winning the premier league, so they wont spend huge money, they are here to make money, all they care about is the profit and loss sheets.
