For me Salah at this moment is right up there and being in form at the right time matters, but taking 2021 as a whole, I would say it should be:

Lewandowski
Messi
Salah (if he continues current form)

Benzema and Haaland rounding up the top 5. Mbappe has stalled in his development, Ronaldo doesn't contribute much other than the goals, Jorginho has won everything, but that doesn't mean he's the best individually, in fact I would place both Kante and De Bruyne higher than him.

OK if you force me to name others then I'd still go Mo for 1. and the reason for that is that not everyone who wins is winning because the year they've just had is the best, that's often debateable. Some are voted top just because they are due after a number of great years. That's where Mo is for me and although it's supposed to be just 2021 I've no doubt current form influences a fair number of people.

For that reason I think Lewandowski will get it – everyone acknowledges he should have won last year when the awards were not held and he's way too good a player over his career not to get at least one Ballon d'Or. If anyone is "due" one, it's him.

Winning the Copa America as the player of the tournament (he topped pretty much every stat) in Brazil as an Argentine with the weight of expectation on him was incredible.
