Athletic Bilbao Striker Fernando Llorente Admits He Turned Down Liverpool

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has admitted that Liverpool were interested in signing him during the winter transfer window as a replacement for their departing Spanish international Fernando Torres.

Llorente and los Leones were opposed to the star striker being sold in January, with clubs such as Tottenham and Real Madrid both rumoured to be interested.

"Representatives from Liverpool arrived in Bilbao and had talks with the leadership of our club, but obviously I did not want to be put on the transfer list. So to talk about this any longer makes no sense," Llorente informed Marca.

"I understand the fans of Athletic who don't like talk of clubs that are interested in me, but it shows that I'm doing my job well. At the moment my football future is associated with Atheltic," the Spanish striker confirmed.

[move]RED ALERT!!![/move]

He'll be in Real, City or Inter this time next year.

He'll definitely move on ... While I like him a lot and think he is a class player, we've got two hungry & talented strikers now. He'll end up with Madrid

Meh.

I had my fair share of Spaniards now.

Apart from Reina obv.

This is a very valid point. All of our world class foreign players (esp. Latin, Reina aside) have moved on, some sooner than others. If Real or Barca come calling they'll want to leave. I hope Suarez doesn't end up in that boat. But for that reason I think I'm very happy with the Carroll and I feel more top quality British players would lead to a more stable side - that doesn't mean I'd necessarily prefer them over other options though !

Carroll and Lllorente are the same type of players. We've now got the English version, so I'd rather focus on getting Martinez from Bilbao.

This too.

I think we'll address that in the summer. Wingers, a class CM who can win a ball as well, a LB and a CB maybe

I think if liverpool buy a quality CB who is good in the air, strong and has good pace the need for a holding midfielder will be lessened. no doubt in my mind that rio and vidic makes it possible to play the likes of fketcher and carrick in the middle of the park.

I don't agree. As and when we're really flying again, competing at the very top and able to attract top quality in all positions, at THAT stage we *may* be able to do without a DM. However, IMO it's significant that most top teams include them and IMO we'll have to do so as well, at least while we're getting back to where we want to be.

I think we need a CM but a pure DM is not an absolute neccessity. Still to have both options is preferable

Plus they have problems keeping their gobs shut.

Getting in someone like M'Vila to compliment Gerrard and Meireles in midfield would be excellent.
A winger with pace to play next to Carroll and Suarez and we're looking deadly.

I'm sure we had a number of targets as money was obviously not an issue for the right player. I'm happier that we got Carroll myself. He's going to be the real deal under Dalglish's tutelage.

Nothing on you specifically, but how many summers, indeed how many transfer windows, have we thought our wingers would be sorted in the next window. Far too many for me. Now the née owners have shown they will spend money, so I'm hopeful. But after years if not having proper wingers, I'm cautious.

Dogleash bought Houghton and Barnes. I trust him to know what we need and get the best.
did he buy wingers at blackburn?

the truth is though, buying carrol and then not buying a winger to give him service from wide areas makes no sense so I fully expect at least one winger to arrive in the summer. whether that winger will be quality is another matter entirely though.

He tried to buy Young and Adam who can deliver a decent ball.
