And we went out looking like we wanted to win. Isn't that what we want?

Sarcasm aside, last night reminded me of a tactical naivety I haven't seen in our team since Roy Evans' day.
I'm not casting final judgment on Hodgson, but he's gotta be a bit more clever than that.

Our resident FM and armchair managers always bang on about how Roy will do the simple things (in other words, decisions we would make) and that will make us better.

We looked clueless last night, and I hope Roy learns something from it. I hope we all learn something from it.

Oh, and...

I'm quite certain that had he played well some would be trumpeting Rafa's tactical genius.

But he flopped, so it's Roy's brainless transfer.

Anyway, theres no question that Hodgson got it wrong; it's the hinting that Rafa would have got it right thats a bit strange.

I'm not hinting that Rafa would have got it right. Just that it isn't as simple as often made out, and there were tactical elements of Rafa and GH's reigns that were underestimated.

It probably would have been a better idea to go 4 5 1 but credit to roy for his ambition. Fact is they have a much much better younger faster more skillful team and that means more often than not they will win.

Uncle Woy got everything wrong last night, everything.

* Agger at LB, I don't know how we got away with it against Arsenal, but Agger's no LB, and he got done yesterday, he should have played Aurelio. (Has Insua gone btw?)

* Ngog up top with Torres: Torres prefers playing up from on his own, there was no need for Ngog.

* 442, I mean *442*, seriously, get over it. We don't have the players to play a 442, you've got two front men playing wide position in a 442, Jovanavic and Kuyt work playing wider roles of an offensive three behind the striker but they are not wingers, they should not be played in wide positions in a 442.

* Lucas. Just Lucas. Why didn't he play Poulsen?

* 4231 is what he should have been playing, he shouldn't have sent Aquilani on loan, he should have been playing in behind Torres. Even with him gone, he should have played Kuyt in behind and Babel or Maxi on the right.

It was clear twenty minutes in that we were getting over run in midfield, they were a man up on is, why didn't he change it?

It's all too easy to sit here and call Mascherano every name under The Lying Rag and blame him for it entirely, but he can't be blamed for all of the above.

We were awful last night.

I don't think the formation we played last night had much to do with the result personally.

We've got to give Roy time to settle in and sort our squad issues out, whilst praying that the 2 twats fuck off soon.

With the players available to Roy last night, i don't think by simply adjusting the formation we'd of got a much different result.

I disagree, you wouldn't have players like Kuyt and Jovanavic playing midfield and you wouldn't have 2 v 3 in CM.

why's it strange? i find it almost impossible to imagine rafa sending out a team that gets completely overrun like last night.

Great Post. Hodgson last night reminded me a lot of Sven.

Well we'll never know anita, but thats just my thoughts on it.

It still would of been 2 v 3 in midfield even if we'd changed formation.

Roy got his fingers burnt last night and would have learnt his lesson or at least I hope. Still its early days and there is time to recover despite being at a disadvantage.

Good post.

Btw the reason we got away with playing Agger against Arsenal was because they insisted on attacking us down the middle instead of trying to introduce any width into their play (also Masher) wasn't being a dick in that game.
