we actually played well ... disappointing result, but it's hard not to feel happy with the effort ...

That and the fact that we were not humiliated, battered etc AND we kept our better players fresh for Chelsea. Exactly what we should be doing with this squad.

Thought Flanagan showed decent moments attacking the down the right flank.

Coady was decent too

Flanagan surprised me, he has obviously been working hard on his technique. A rarity. I'd always been an admirer of Coady but I must confess my faith in him fulfilling his potential had started to ebb away this season. He did okay today.

Also why can't jones get his kicking past the half way line.

I hate it when keepers kick the ball aimlessly long into the opposing half .... 99/100 it is gifting possession back. Just our side of the centre circle should be the target.

3-touch Shelvey's fecking shite right now, isn't he?
I also can't understand why our midfielders, including him (Suso as well just after he came on), continued to ignore the runs Morgan, and then Cole, were making behind the defense down the middle. I mean, the defenders would have been flat footed, and we'd certainly have created a load of opportunities whether the ball went through the defense or lobbed/flicked over. Are the players we have THAT limited?

Tbh the home side was horrendously poor. I thought we were quite good considering the team and players available.

So much money spent and yet a very very ordinary side. Young Boys could probably beat them at home.

We did enough to get something positive from the game ...

Well, Jones made two great saves, they broke away twice and somehow contrived to miss the target. That's why I think it could easily have been 4-0. LFC, on the other hand, were so painfully slow in everything they tried, and so obvious in intent. Suso was a breath of fresh air when he came on.

What is the point in cole, Henderson, downing and shelvey? The 4 of them r dogshit. Surely we've got some under 16's that need developing rather than playing these 4? I'd honestly rather see us field the under 16's and get smacked out of this poxy cup than watch them 4 'play'.

I wouldn't mind, but downing looks like he's actually capable of crossing a ball but he doesn't give a flying arse where they end up. He seems to walk away pleased if theyve 'ended up in the box'. The twat.

Yeah I agree with this. I'm surprisingly not that bothered we lost. The kids did alright again - The usual suspects were a bag of shite (Cole I'm looking at you) Suso in particular looked great when he came on.

As an aside I quite like Gordon Strachan - A decent sum up.

Cole overall was ok. He lost the ball continually, but made some good passes. He should have scored on his one opportunity after the keeper fumbled Henderson's shot.

Henderson - no confidence whatsoever. 1 on 1 with the keeper and he passes. Fuck me.

Downing - little confidence, but he really shouldn't be playing ahead of Assaidi. I'd be tempted to give his minutes to Pacheco (though he's poor on the wings) or one of our younger, up n' coming wingers.

Shelvey - he's not as 'on' as he was earlier, and needs to iron out some issues in his game (holding onto the ball for too long etc). He's a talented lad though, and needs his games.

I thought Morgan did well, and it's a pity he came off ... Props to Flanagan, who's improved a lot imo, and Coady - who held his own too. THough like Macca, I'm not sure he'll ever come to close to the player some of us thought he may be.

The young lad from celtic had exactly the same chance as Henderson he looked at Valdez position and placed the ball in the net for celtic's winner .

am not too despondent - we had some average players out there who had traveled god knows how many hours and were playing in freezing conditions - they held theri heads up and were not embarrassed. Key players are rested for Chelsea.

Suso was wonderful to watch.

Pacheco, cole, downing all need to go.

Coady is not good enough.

Morgan is too light weight for the formation we are playing (he could be decent as part of a front 2)

Worried about Wisdom, he needs to focus on basics for the time.

Pacheco shouldn't be given up on yet - he showed tremendous hustle, and had some nice link up play. He wasn't Suso, but that doesn't mean he should be flogged off yet.

The first time you've seen Coady I assume? He wasn't bad considering it was his first competitive game! Nervous opening minutes, but he played solid defensive football and had an absolute great pass to Flanagan.

Morgan played fine - he should have had an assist and he makes really smart runs. Don't know he'll 'make it' but he's a very interesting prospect.

Wisdom made one bad mistake, that Jones saved us on. But he really improved after that, twice out muscling and out pacing Eto'o. As Macca said in another thread, these youngsters will have up and downs and just need to be rested periodically to ensure we don't burn them out too soon. He'll be fine.

we should buy Borak Yilmaz a very good striker .

How often have you seen him play? I've seen him once or twice, and the YouTube compilation Dmish posted. He seems like a good goalscorer but would probably cost 8-12 million, and considering he's only played in Turkey, it's a bit of a gamble.
